Are intersex fish a sign of dangerous chemicals in our waters?

A new study of fish populations of the river basins of Pennsylvania found that all populations sampled of white suckers and smallmouth bass have males with eggs (i.e., intersex fish). The effect is especially pronounced near water treatment facilities.

The pervasive stew of chemicals that humans use in pharmaceuticals and pesticides are leaching into rivers and doing weird things to the fish. How concerned should we be about this?
