Are koalas in the zoos masterplan and when i was there a keeper said that there was a 90% chance of the zoo getting pandas, is there any news on the arrival of pandas?

As far as i know, there is no further news on the pandas, negotiations particularly in this case are very delicate and need to be kept out of the public eye.
The RZSS has taken on the role of a holding facility for male koala in the European region, so expect the koala to come and go in the near future, but no babies for a few years anyway.

With pandas to any country it is very much a symbolic gift from the Chinese government to the head of government of the receiving country. In the case of Edinburgh, Gordon Brown. Any change in Prime Minister has the potential of moving things back to square one! Currently there will be a lot of damage limitation work being done as regards the way the media reported Chris Packham's statement as regards Panda conservation.
By working to conserve any species you almost, by default, help to save others. The panda is a significant species in its part of the world.
As will be high on the agenda in 2010, biodiversity is key. By damageing the environment that is home to the panda, many other rare and unique Chinese species are left vulnerable. Working to save the Panda not only helps the Panda but helps other species and China as a whole. I think it's fair to say that everyone in the world wants to save the panda but there are animals all over the world that need our help.
The work that would be carried out at Edinburgh would include genetic and dental work and would increase our knowledge of this charismatic species. It would also help in so many other areas and for other species too.

I just had a thought, symbolically the arrival of pandas could reflect the olympic situation (from Being to London) and so perhaps the arrival of pandas could coincide with the olympics.
