Are These in Captivity? #2

I've never seen them offered for sale or in a zoo, but I've heard they are in the cage bird trade in small numbers; various reports of the species from California in particular are attributed to escaped birds.

According to an old guide book from the local library, Sedgwick County Zoo kept this species in the 70s.

You know, I've been wondering this for a while now, but besides San Diego, what/do any other facilities have Harpy Eagles? The last time I saw something relating to how many zoos had them was a thread made back in 2009. And, of course, things change over time. So do any other facilities have them?

Would anyone happen to know if the mother-&-son pair of helmeted hornbills ( Rhinoplax vigil ) are still present at the Penang Bird Park ?

I had made an enquiry in Melayu via email, but did not receive a response.

I tried to figure this out a while ago just by watching hours of Youtube videos of walkthroughs of the place - if I remember correctly my conclusion was that the hornbills are no longer on show but I have no idea whether the collection still holds them or whether they have been put back on show if so since then.

The Fort Worth Zoo and Dallas World Aquarium both do. I believe the Dallas Zoo may own one as well.

In Europe harpy eagles are kept at Beauval, Nürnberg and Tierpark Berlin.
If you had looked at the thread just a tiny bit more you might have noticed that a current thread was already linked to in answer to the Harpy Eagle question, so that there was no need to post these piecemeal answers:

You should check out this thread
Harpy's in captivity

So, I was looking through the LA Zoo and saw some interesting additions they wanted to add into the zoo

Blue ringed octopus
Banded sea krait
Cone Snail
Painted anglerfish
Brush-tailed rat kangaroo

Does anyone know of these animals in captivity? I think I may of heard of a tropical fish shop in Florida getting the octopus (for some reason)

SeaWorld San Diego had banded sea snakes many years ago. There were come snails at the Dallas Aquarium at the fairgrounds a few years ago too.

Aquarium of the Pacific also had sea kraits and I believe Toledo has them currently. Also the first four species coming to LA have all been cancelled due to a change in plans.

I received information a few weeks ago that the last one died. I see one pop up in local private collections from time to time but there is no zoological institution left that holds this species at the moment.

White-face butterflyfish, Chaetodon mesoleucos
Arabian butterflyfish, Chaetodon melapterus *
Meyer's butterflyfish, Chaetodon meyeri *
I have seen all three of those butterflyfishes for sale in the aquarium trade before. I saw a meyeri only a few weeks ago.

How many zoos currently have Great Bustard and Persian Goitered Gazelle?
Great bustard: 2 zoos in Germany, 3 in Russia, 2 in Ukraine, 2 in the United Kingdom, a few in China, etc.

Persian gazelle (Gazella subgutturosa subgutturosa): 10 zoos in Europe, 1 in Russia and 2 in Turkey. Probably more in Asian parks as well.

One may recognize the Arabian sand gazelle (Gazella marica) as a former subspecies of the Persian gazelle as well. This one is kept in 6 zoos in the Middle East.

You can find all this information on the website Zootierliste that keeps track of EAZA animal collections around the world.

Are there any zoos that display Malayasian Fire Snail, Picasso Bug (Sphaerocoris annulus) and Pyrops Candelaria.

I doubt that the last two are kept in captivity, perhaps locals catch them and try keeping them as a pet, but nothing in zoos as far as I can tell. The Malaysian fire snail is kept in a few parks in Malaysia. I have seen pictures of it from Melaka Butterfly and Reptile Sanctuary. The species is also rarely imported out of Asia for the private trade, but because of their endangered status and extreme difficulty to breed in captivity, this is not something we should promote. Famous reptile store La Ferme Tropicale had them for sale only two months ago for 79 euro per snail. Let's hope they don't import them again for the sake of the species.
