I caught the back end of a TV documentary and a sea trawl brought up this clam, only about the size of a mans palm and this scientist said it was probably well over a 100 years old, but they threw it back to the sea bed as the species was so scarce. I did a bit of Google research and realised that they were indeed probably some of the oldest animals in the world. To discover this one is over 500 years old is a find. However as the only way to currently determine the age of a clam like this is to kill it, could a clam in perfect conditions for its species be an animal that could be considered immortal?
Big up Bangor Uni, I did 2 weeks research on limpets at Bangor a lovely Uni on the coast as part of my degree, nice to see them making headlines with interesting info.
