Hey guys!

I really need some help here and I am putting together the largest zoos in the world. The problem is I need to prove it, can anyone help me find the areas of some of the largest? Thank you very much!

Toronto Zoo - 710 acres
Bronx -
San Diego -
SDWAP -

You could use Google Earth Pro to draw a polygon around the boundary of the zoo and let it calculate the area. Of course, you'd need to know where the borders of the zoo are, but more often than not they're easy to see on aerial photography.

Google Earth Pro isn't free, but there is a seven-day trial.

Just one of them would be Allen Nyhuis and Jon Wassner's new book, 'America's Best Zoos' and I guess they got the figure confirmed from the zoo itself.

The authors are both on Zoochat. Allen contributes frequently, and I know he collects hard statistics such as size and number of species. I'm sure you can get all the info you need just by purchasing his book, and extra information by writing him a PM.

I know this wasn't on the list but The Wilds in Canton, Ohio is 10,000 acres :)

The AZA membership directory lists the information for all member zoos. I think it even makes the important distinction between acreage and "developed acreage."

I am out of the office or I'd happily look the zoos up for you.

Port lympne Wild Animal park and Whipsnade Zoo (both UK) our 600 Acres and our the largest Zoological collections in the UK

It depends on your definition of zoo. Are you talking only traditional zoos or are you including wildlife parks? If so, then all of the biggest would be wildlife parks like The Wilds (USA), Fossil Rim (USA), San Diego Zoo Safari Park (USA - do I get extra credit for using the new name?), Port Lympne (UK), and the world's biggest is some place in either Russia or Ukraine - I forget the name - but it was mentioned on a similar topic thread here a while back.

If you are talking traditional zoos, that might make it easier. Not sure about other countries, but some of biggest in U.S. are Bronx Zoo (which claims to be the largest "urban zoo"), North Carolina Zoo, Minnesota Zoo.

If you include animal theme parks then you could throw in Disney Animal Kingdom and Busch Gardens.

A valid point there from Arizona! I would say traditional zoos, seeing as wildlife parks are cheating on the acre side! :D

I figured that's the way you were wanting to go with this but since the SDWAP was on the list I'd thought I'd put that in there.

Another larger zoo would be the Columbus Zoo. Before the construction of Polar Frontier, the zoo was 82 acres. I'm not sure how many acres it is now with Polar Frontier, but after complete expansion (African Savannah, Polar Frontier, and South and Central America) the zoo will be over 250 acres. The zoo owns a total of 580 acres, but that includes Jungle Jack's Landing (An amuesment park) Zambezi Bay ( A water park) and Safari Golf Club (A golf course).
