Taronga Western Plains Zoo arna and gigi to western plains zoo

Even the best enclosures seem to have there down points according to the keepers and zoo vets I've chatted to when visiting or books I've read...

The outdoor enclosure may be spectular for visitors and very enriching for the animals but the night quarters may be cold and damp and since this where the animals spend most of their time this greatly affects them...

Or the enclosure may be fantastic for the animals but poor for the keepers therefore affecting the care the animals receive, etc... My point is:

In my humble opinion I think breeding is some indication of animal happiness it depends on the species and individuals...

haha, now were comparing elephants to mink.....yes elephants are complex creatures and yes they need space, but the zoo exhibit at taronga, which, particularly for european correspondents need to be seen, i think, before passing comment.
elephants are hard to breed in captivity. im not saying taronga zoo is perfect, just that they must be doing somethings right....

Arna and Gigi are going to be staying at Western Plains Zoo permanently following expert assessment of the animals, and their relationship with resident female Burma.
its a good outcome, and theres a nice picture available of all three together...
theyve even be swimming together! how lovely. as much as Taronga is criticised for its elephants they have done the right thing here, including still looking after Bullens' Burma

@ glyn: I won`t say much more on this topic, we have to agree that we disagree.

Just 2 points - I have seen the Taronga ele exhibit, and I was shocked (had hoped before the numbers I`d read before about the exhibit size were wrong). Australia is an extremely popular tourist destination in Germany. And if you think Taronga must do something right to get their eles to breed, what do you think the Odessa Zoo in the Ukraine, where 2 elephants live in 2 yards with a concrete floor and a combined space of 1/10 acre (or 400 m²), is doing right?

Forgot to mention - I am thrilled that Arna and Gigi will stay in Dubbo, and that Burma found friends. Fantastic outcome for all 3. It`s just so sad that a human had to die for that.

Artifical Insemination..?

why is that not even slightly surprising to me?

your right Pat, it wasa no-brainer really but a good outcome all the same. Yassa, i will agree to disagree with you. i just dont subscribe to the 'all elephants need is lots of space' theory.
if that were the case, alot of zoos currently breeding elephants wouldnt be, and some zoos such as Western Plains Zoo would have bred their African Elephants years ago.
its just one of the things that make the elephant one of the most enigmatic and fascinating creatures in the zoo world. (they are my favourite animal)

The Odessa Zoo has a pair of elephants (1.1) and unfortunately they are breeding naturally. The last calf, a male, was sold to a circus when he was 11 months old but did not survive their long...

Glyn, I agree with you (yes, LOL!!!) that elephants don`t need much space to BREED - I am just not drawing the conclusion that this means all is well.
