Arna the circus elephant is heading for a new home. news is about to go to air so ill post info straight away

well i guess that solves too problems really.... Dubbo had Burma who they were getting it to a bit of strife for keeping alone and the circus needed to get rid of their elephants

its a great outcome. it also secures the relative future of 'big' attractions at Dubbo for the next few decades.

Remeber both are 50 years old, they may only be around for a decade. And i just watched the seven news (delayed in my area due to local new broadcast @ 6), it said only a short term solution whilst assesments are done, maybe they ill not stay at Dubbo. Though to be on a happier note, what a great outcome! For the moment Burma will have some company, and dubbo some new attractions!

Killer elephant's future up in air - Breaking News - National - Breaking News

'Taronga Zoo's open range property at Western Plains Zoo has offered initial accommodation for the two elephants while the regional zoos jointly undertake the immediate behavioural and quarantine assessments necessary to identify a permanent home for the elephants'

So they still may end up moving else where, i hope all 3 can stay together, but elephants are a drain on resources.

If the two girls stay at dubbo thats 2(?) african and three asian elephants which i can imagine would take a lot of resources, time and effort to manage effectivly so it would be hard on Dubbo, not impossible just difficult but at least burma would have some friends

This is really good news what ever zoo they go to. I'm glad the circus saw sense. And no mention of any money transactions?

to put in perspective, this time last yr they still had 5 elephants!

(well heman died dec 27, and cheri in may or june)

Would they keep these two Elephants with their current ones to begin with..?

dubbo has 2 africans, and 1 asian, with 1 large african exhibit, and 1 large asian exhibit with capacity to be divivided, so it can mange 3 groups of elephants, or it can house 1 all asian group, and 1 all african group. yes, they can keep the 2 new ones with the exisiting asian, dependent on behavioral issues, but not with africans- wpz has very strict quarrinintine.

you never know-the publicity surrounding this incident could lead to WPZ securing funding for a new elephant barn? any news on the acquisition of the New Zealand African Elephant? and does anyone have any further details on the timeframe surrounding the transfer?
i sincerely hope that Arna and Gigis' transfer to WPZ is permanent-it would be a wonderful outcome for both the two girls and Burma. also, the chance for these animals to receive professional care pleases me immensely-if you have seen the condition of Arna and Gigi youll know what I mean.
think of how different life will be for them-
a=small herd scenario (possibly)
b=opportunity to swim and fully immerse their bodies every day
c=a huge enclosure in which to stretch their legs
d=endless enrichment opportunities
e=a professional and dedicated team of keepers, highly qualified and backed up by specialist vets.
no gay music, no performing, just a peaceful and happy retirement.

From memory there are not facilities to allow the elephants to fully submerge themselves, I could be wrong but I don't remember the pool being that deep at all. The Asian Enclosure is much smaller than the African and I believe the girls will be handled with restricted contact, meaniing there are actually less opportunities fro enrichment than say Australia Zoo or any free contact situation. But Dubbo would be my preference of all the ARAZPA Zoos as it's closer to me. And as someone said earlier, they might get some funding for the animals enclosures to be possibly expanded, if the girls staay there.

Like the rest of you, I hope Arna and Gigi can stay at Dubbo with Burma.

What alternatives would there be? Any ideas?

jarkari i dont actually think the asian elephant compound is smaller. in fact, when Burma was in the exhibit on the far left and Heman in the middle i got the feeling it was quite a bit BIGGER.
as for the depth of the pool i am unsure. but in the very least the elephant will be able to lay down in the pool and take a weight off their feet. and fully immerse in terms of rolling around. it will be great for the condition of their skin.
