At the start of this year multiple new species arrived at the Hollandse polder aviary. Namely a group of juvenile Common ringed plovers (Charadrius hiaticula) making Artis the second zoo in The Netherlands with this species according to ZTL (the other one being Vogelpark Ruinen). One of the other new species is the Lesser white-fronted geese (Anser erythropus).

Out of curiosity, what are some of the rarest/most uncommon species that Artis has? If all goes well I'm hoping to visit in March, so I'm hoping to see some cool stuff over there.

Great that you might be going to Artis this year, you can always send me a message if you want to meet up ;D

Sadly quite a few rarities have left the collection in the past years, but Artis still has some interesting species left. For instance the Lowland anoa (Bubalus depressicornis), European Garden dormice (Eliomys quercinus), Persian jirds (Meriones persicus), Collared Kingfishers (Todiramphus chloris) and Socorro doves (Zenaida graysoni).
Some other species that are also on the rarer side in European zoos: false gharials (Tomistoma schlegelii), Brazilian porcupines (Coendou prehensilis).

Also have look on Zootierliste which has an overview of most of the species that are currently kept in Artis.

Recently the renovation of the Volharding (Large white building with the vulture aviary against it) has been completed. Therefore the Tasmanian red-necked wallaby (Notamacropus rufogriseus fruticus) have returned to their enclosure adjecent to this building. However this is no longer a walkthrough enclosure, since this gave the animals to much stress.

During a recent visit a read on a sign that 25-year old female California sea lion (Zalophus californianus) Carolien had passed away.

The ARTIS Aquarium has been closed to visitors for exactly two years today. The national monument that opened its doors in 1882 has been under scaffolding since 2021. The salt water from the aquariums has worked its way into the building's brickwork, stucco and interior to such an extent that a large-scale restoration could no longer be postponed.

Following the relocation of over 100 different species of fish, corals and amphibians to other zoos, restoration/demolition work has been hard at work over the past year. During the work, even 19th-century ornaments and doors have emerged that the zoo did not know existed. The next two years are dedicated to construction and restoration.

While the contractor takes care of the building, aquarists are thinking about which freshwater and saltwater fish, amphibians, algae and other underwater animals will soon be seen here. A creative team is working on the conceptual interpretation of the building. Aquarium technology is also getting attention now. In a pop-up aquarium, set up behind the scenes in the ARTIS Park with a number of freshwater and saltwater aquariums, aquarists are doing research to improve water filtration systems. The new aquariums will represent the greatest possible biodiversity of fish, corals, shrimps, sea urchins, sponges, algae, bacteria and algae.

According to a sign in the small mammal house a Goeldi's monkey (Callimico goeldii) was born at the start of this year.

Furthermore, the Lowland anoa (Bubalus depressicornis) and Eurasian cranes (Grus grus grus) have swapped enclosures. The anoa can now be found in the former Malayan tapir enclosure next to the gorilla's.

how often do they swap the anoas because I saw them in the tapir enclosure June last year as well.

Often.....

The anoas spend some time in the tapir enclosure last year while their old enclosure was getting refurbished. A new male was also introduced to the female during this period which could be better done in the tapir enclosure. At the start of July they moved to their "old" refurbished enclosure, later that year the female died. The male showed a lot of stereotypic behaviour after her death, so potentially that has played a role in the latest move.

ARTIS, in collaboration with five students from the AMS Institute, has developed a sustainable park bench made of elephant poo. Recently, the first prototype was placed in the zoo overlooking the Asian elephants' enclosure.

The bench consists of 65% elephant poo and 35% recycled plastic. If the prototype remains of good quality, the ambition is to eventually replace all park benches in ARTIS with this sustainable model.

Can somebody please help me identifying the fish species in this video at 35 seconds in
and also tell if the shot was taken in micropia or het groote museum?

But also generaly speaking what animal species are kept in these two institutions?

I am not sure which fish species it is, but the shot was taken in Micropia.

As far as I know the Groote Museum has no living animals, apart from maybe worms (in one of their displays), in their collection. Micropia had during my last visit (a few years back) a few fish species, leafcutter ants and Splitfin flashlightfish.

If I had to guess from that not great angle; checkered barb, Oliotius oligolepis.

Recently a Burrowing owl (Athene cunicularia) and 2 Malaysian Great Argus (Argusianus argus argus) hatched. For the latter species this is the first time since the 90s that this species has bred in Artis.

Around a week ago 2 Four-toed hedgehog (Atelerix albiventris) have been put on display in the small mammal house (former grey mouse lemur enclosure).

A pair of Red-billed curassows (Crax blumenbachii) have arrived from Weltvogelpark Walsrode, they can be found in the large aviary at the birdhouse.

The keas have left the collection, their collection is being refurbished to house 3 new bird species!

During my visit yesterday I saw the new bird species in the former kea enclosure: Ochre-marked parakeets (Pyrrhura cruentata), Blue ground-doves (Claravis pretiosa) and a species of quail.

The red jungle fowl in the Metzelaarskas also have chicks, I counted around 8.

Given that Burgers' Mangrove is the main source of blue ground doves at the moment, I wouldn't be surprised if the quails are crested bobwhites, which are also multiplying like rabbits in the same exhibit ;).

I believe that this was also the species that I saw yesterday, couldn't lay my finger on the name.

Thanks for the recent info @JurassicMax! Because of these notes, I went to Artis this afternoon and had a good view of the recent additions (pigeons, bobwhites, curassows and hedgehogs).

No Problem AWP!
Did you also see the parakeets?

I sometimes get the two buildings mixed up in my head...
