Artis Royal Zoo Artis News 2023

Several Dutch newspapers are citing a press message sent out by Artis about their chimpansee group.

Artis is looking to move their chimpansee group to a different zoo. A definite decision has not been made yet. The zoo states the chimpansee group needs more space / quality of life than Artis can offer them: being a city zoo, they cannot easily expand the enclosure. Artis states they are taking this step to give the chimps the best quality of life.

A petition has been started by zoo visitors to keep the chimps in Amsterdam. Although Artis has not stated or confirmed which zoo(s) could be the new home for the group, there are speculations about a zoo in India.

I wonder what your opinion is in this debate. I will state my own opinion in my next message, to keep this post purely informative. :)

My personal opinion: I think animal wellfare should be the number one concern in making a decision.
The petition mainly states chimps are very social animals, and they'd be disturbed by suddenly moving and their social contacts (with carers and other humans) being disturbed.

I think moving animals as a group shouldn't disturb their social relations so much, as they are all connected in the group, and are each others primary social contacts. It's sad to see a zoo favourite go, and I understand the emotions from the Artis vistitors here, but in my personal opinion: animal wellfare is #1.

Also I am not to worried the animals will end up in a zoo with lower wellfare standards as Artis is not pressured to move the animals by a third party, and cites animal wellbeing as their motivation. I would be surprised if they'd pick a zoo where the animals have a lower wellfare standard.

There were many complaints when the Asian elephants left London Zoo. Hopefully, I helped persuade several visitors that the elephants were better off at Whipsnade.

I have finally cleared my zoo news backlog, so I can now give some new (now bit older) news of Artis!

In May the new frog area finally opened!
This area is located in the upper part of the vlindertuin/ butterfly greenhouse opposite of the sea lion enclosure. This area is referred to as the "Stek", briefly housed an ice cream stand and now mostly sits empty (good area to work). You can easily go to the Stek if you take the stone staircase from the insectarium to the sea lions and go straight into the butterfly greenhouse

The frog area has 5 different terrariums, housing 5 frog species and 1 reptile species:

- Little rock frogs (Staurois parvus)*
- Red-eyed Tree Frogs (Agalychnis callidryas)
- Dyeing dart frogs (Dendrobates tinctorius var. regina)
- Golfodulcean poison dart frogs (Phyllobates vittatus) *
- Blue poison dart frogs (Dendrobates tinctorius var. azureus)
-
William's electric blue gecko (Lygodactylus williamsi)

* New on show species, most of them have been kept behind the scenes for a few years.

Here are some pictures of the new area.

Other news:
- In May multiple Crested partridges (Rollulus rouloul) and Red junglefowls (Gallus gallus) hatched.

- Last week the enclosures of the Northern treeshrew, Southern three-banded armadillo and Persian jirds were empty. The enclosure were being refurbished and soon the animals will return.

- Last week I noticed a sign of the giant anteater at the anoa enclosure, so I persume the giant anteaters will move to this enclosure. Not sure whether this will improve their visibility, since they are quite old and tend to sleep most of the day.

- The gorilla's are getting a second inside enclosure (behind the scenes). This enclosure will be positioned in the old office area above the current inside enclosure. Currently the inside enclosure is closed to the public due to the construction of this, but will be reopened next week.

- In June a Red-crowned crane (Grus japonensis) hatched, I believe that this is the first young since the enclosure has been renovated.

- In June 2 Scimitar-horned oryxes (Oryx dammah) were born, sadly one passed away a few days later. These are the first young to be born in the new enclosure!

Some news from my visit of today:

- The Northern treeshrew, Southern three-banded armadillos and Persian jirds are back on display in the small mammalhouse. The Northern treeshrew and Persian jirds have swapped enclosures.

- The former Margay enclosure is now housed by a group of Degus (Octodon degus). This is a new species for Artis, they were kept in the zoo till 2011.

- The inside enclosure of the gorillas was still closed.

- I forgot to mention that the former coypu enclosure is getting refurbished to house the Indian crested porcupines. Some part of the bamboo area will also be added to this enclosure.

- I saw the giant anteaters in the inside enclosure of the former anoa enclosure.

I’m visiting Artis today, although I’m going to have to swim round the zoo :p What are the parts that I should see?

With this weather, Micropia, the Bird & monkey ("tropical") house, the greenhouses and the back of the zoo as well as the small mammal house, whose entrance is somewhat hidden. You didn't exactly pick the best day with a storm :p

I think I’m visiting a different day since it’s closed today

Sadly the last Northern yellow-throated marten (Martes flavigula aterrima) has been euthanised recently, the animal was already quite old. This enclosure is currently empty.

Yesterday the two female Indian crested porcupines (Hystrix indica) have moved from their small enclosure at the small mammal house to the former coypu enclosure. This enclosure has been renovated to meet their needs, one side now has sand as substrate and the other side dirt. I will upload some images this weekend.

This means that two adjacent outside enclosures of the small mammal house are currently empty.

Sad to hear, the inhabbitans of this building have been dying out slowly or given a new enclosure some where else in the park. It is a shame but the enclosures are to small. So they either give the enclosures to even smaller mammals or they rebuild it. Either way I hope they dont lose the concept. Like the jungle by night theme.

A new/renovated small mammal house is in the plans for the near future, so that is hopeful, the current building really is showing its age and the martens got a really bad deal...

Visiting next week, will have plenty of time to see everything but any must-sees or advice from regulars? :)

Artis is one of 4 ZTL collections with whiptail catfish
It is the only ZTL collection with a blackbelly limia, Siamese halfbeak, Tapahoney corydoras, coppename corydoras and Suriname corydoras

All of these should be in the Aquarium
