I thought the most recent one they released shows that the enclosure is being replaced and the chimpanzees are not on the new master plan map unless I’m mistaken?They tried that until a few years ago, but no other zoo wanted their chimpanzee group
The master plan describes a ‘primate hill’ at the back of the zoo. An Artis spokesperson told ZooFlits that there are also plans for a new chimpanzee enclosure within that area.

After more than four years, the restoration of the ARTIS Aquarium was completed today. With respect for the original design by architect Gerlof Salm, the Aquarium has been completely restored and adapted to the requirements of the 21st century. The roof is equipped with solar panels, part of the aquarium tanks are cast in ‘self-healing concrete’ and the historical colours and materials have been restored as much as possible.
The Aquarium is now ready for the next phase: bringing back aquatic life and building exhibition spaces about the importance of water. The reopening of the Aquarium is planned for the first half of 2026. From then on, visitors will be taken on a journey through the world's oceans, lakes and rivers. Each room tells its own story about biodiversity, ecology and the relationship between humans and water.

Apart from the little egrets also a Japanese crane (Grus japonensis) hatched.
Last month a Brazilian porcupine (Coendou prehensilis) was born, the second young to be born in the zoo since their return in 2021.
Two McCord's snake-necked turtle (Chelodina mccordi) hatchlings can also be found in the Reptile House.
Some new species also arived at the zoo:
Yellow cardinals (Gubernatrix cristata) have been added to the pheasantry. This species was kept in Artis in the past, the last time was in the 70s.
Armadillo lizards (Ouroborus cataphractus) have been added to the round terrarium in the Reptile House. This is a completely new species for the zoo and is only kept in 8 zoos in Europe!
Western chameleon geckos (Eurydactylodes occidentalis) have been added to a terrarium in the Stek (in the Butterfly Pavilion). This is also a completely new species for the zoo and is only kept in 5 European zoos!
Furthermore a Redtail catfish (Phractocephalus hemioliopterus) and another catfish species (both unsinged) have been added to the tank in the Gorilla House.

They are! They will be housed in the former African wild dog enclosure. The enclosure has been adapted for the new animals. Sand hills have been created and new plants have been added. The bat-eared foxes will be visible to visitors from this week onwards.

I have seen them for the first time today, I saw 2 animals sleeping in the den in the outside enclosure. A great addition to the zoo!
They currently only have access to one part of the enclosure, the other part (next to the raccoons) still houses the European cranes.

Truth be told ... not accurate: The zoo had every intention to and made arrangement with another zoo to transfer the entire group of elderly pure-bred and the rest hybrid chimpanzee to another interested party. However, after one of the main group members developped a medical condition the whole thing was called off indefinitely.They tried that until a few years ago, but no other zoo wanted their chimpanzee group
NOTA BENE: All I will say, given confidentiality restrictions and out of respect to my hometown zoo. Do not even ask ....

Last month the zoo's last female Nepalese red panda (Ailurus fulgens) was euthanised, she was already quite old. The zoo will eventually receive new red pandas for join the otters at some point. The European cranes have been moved to her former enclosure.

Had a great visit to Artis yesterday. My last visit was back in November, when a few things were closed. Here's everything new I noticed:
- Apparently there's a new director in Artis. The last one wasn't a big fan of signage and the new one is (thank goodness) so there's multiple places with new booklets with listed species. You can see these in the bird house and the tropical greenhouse. The one in the greenhouse also signs all the fish in the Greenhouse's pond, which weren't known up to that point. Zoo guides coming out soon with all the species
- The burrowing owls have moved out of the Forest house to two spots elsewhere in the park: A small group now lives with Crested guineafowl in the outdoor aviary of the Bird house's desert section. Another group moved to the former Grey-winged trumpeter aviary in the pheasantry. With the Burrowing owls leaving there is immediately a mouse infestation in the Forest house...
- The two Wreathed hornbills in the bird house have been separated, with the male in the free-roaming area and the female in the Sumatran laughingthrush aviary.
During my last visit some of the terrariums in the reptile house were being renovated, they were now all filled again. Here's an updated species list:

- The new enclosure for Asian small-clawed otter and Red pandas is finished and looks amazing, the red pandas are ready behind the scenes but the enclosure still needs to pass the inspection. The Small-clawed otters are already in.
- They were working on building the bridge between the Ruffed lemur island and the old lion terrace. Both the Lemur island and the path in between are closed right now.
- In the Small mammal house, a new group of Ring-tailed lemurs have arrived from Blijdorp zoo, being introduced to Artis's group. They, together with the Red ruffed lemurs, will be able to share the Kerber terrace and the lemur island soon. This also means that quite a large spece will open up for new animals in the Small mammal house
- New in the small mammal house is the Western painted turtle, held with the European pond turtles and European glass lizards
- The old Mouflon stables and pigeon house were being renovated during my last visit, these are finished by now. The old Mouflon stable has been turned into a little playhouse, with the names of animals held here in the past above the little gates (Fallow deer, Mouflon, Barbary sheep, Markhor, Alpine ibex and Bennet wallaby). The old Pigeon house has been turned into a poffertjes restaurant. It smelled great so I decided to have some but I should've learned my lesson from last time: never eat at Artis.
The poffertjes were completely tasteless and doughy, up to a point where I had to get extra sugar from a bowl intended to be used for coffee.
Old mouflon stable:
- The indoor enclosure for Chimpansees was being renovated, the visitor area will be added to the Chimps' space, so they will soon be able to use the whole building
- In the Pheasantry the Socorro doves have made way for Yellow cardinals. I'm pretty sure the Socorro doves are now out of the collection
- The Insectarium is open again, this was partially closed during my last visit. I don't see any differences with my previous visit, but I was finally able to see the Crocodile lizard habitat in here (it was there last year but I wasn't able to see it, it's not on my zoo guides so I don't know how new it is). It's a very cool habitat although I wasn't able to see them.
- The Pig-nosed turtle in the Gorilla house isn't there anymore, two new species here are a huge Barred sorubim and a truly colossal Red-tailed catfish. Very imposing animals, even among the already imposing Black pacus
- In het gorillahuis zijn de Drieklauwschildpadden weg, wel zijn er een kolossale Roodstaartmeerval en een enorme Gestreepte spatelmeerval (Pseudoplatystoma fasciatum) bijgekomen. Erg imposante dieren, zelfs tussen de op zichzelf al imposante Zwarte pacu's.
- During my last few visits the Polder aviary only held Eurasian spoonbills due to a sickness in the aviary. Luckily, it seems the disease is gone as the aviary is once again a multi-species habitat. Species list will be seen in my zoo guides
In general it was a very nice visit. Artis' volunteer guides are always up for a chat and there were a lot of Scottish and North-English tourists in the park which is always fun...
