Artis Royal Zoo Artis Zoo News

Unfortunately I didn't see the armadillo on my visit today. There is no signage of it (yet) in the Small Mammal House, so at first I looked in the central enclosures (that seemed logical to me, keeping an armadillo together with tamarins). I asked a keeper about it and she told me that the armadillo is kept in the darkened enclosure of the mouse lemurs. The armadillo appears to be very shy and hides most of the time in its nest, according to the keeper.

Although I didn't see the armadillo, I left the Small Mammal House happy, because I saw the potto for the first time at this location! (I've seen it several times in the "Jungle by Night"). It was fed just after I entered the SMH, so the potto left his nest box for a couple of minutes.

I also saw the fossa for the frst time since it moved from the Carnivore Gallery to the back of the zoo. Thomson’s gazelles were in the old giraffe enclosure. Ostriches are kept together with nilgai.

Diana monkeys are currently separated of the gorillas, because of the introduction of a young gorilla from Hannover. After the gorillas went outside, I could see them in the inner enclosure. There were lots of suricates in the outside enclosure (using the name "meerkat" would be quite confusing in this case, as the actual meerkats are the Diana monkeys; strange English name...).

On January 11 a Southern ground hornbill hatched at Artis - a first breeding for the zoo :). The younf now starts to leave the nestbox and will be visiable for the visitors.

Some notes from my visit yesterday :
- first time I saw the new Elephant-outdoor enclosure and had hoped to see the Elephants swimming, like they did a few days ago.

I was however not so lucky and the elephants where released on the new enclosure only late in the afternoon.
- Saw also for the first time the 2 new Thomson gazelles in the former Giraffe-enclosure, the Giraffes are now on the African Plain.
- Father, mother and chick Southern hornbill were looking like a happy family and the chick was very tame and came to the wire to inspect the visitors. ( photo of the familie see: Southern ground hornbill-family | ZooChat )
- Couldn't find the Rock sandpipers and also the sign was not anymore on their enclosure ( death, behind the scenes, send to another collection ???, anybody knowing more about it ? )
- In the Aquarium I find a new fish-species which was not signed and I wasn't able ( sofar ) to identify it :

I read somewhere that the last Rock sandpiper is supposed to be in the Spoonbill aviary, but I can't find that info again now. Maybe someone who has been more recently can confirm that. Back in October there were still a few in the aviary at the Birdhouse.

Could be - didn't check that aviary very closely because it was already closing-time so only had a quick look into this aviary and didn't check the signs, thinking that there are always the same species in it ( spoonbill, some ducks, ruffs, grey patridge ). Thanks for this information and next time I will take a closer look :).

They were no longer present in the aviary by the start of February when I visited; given to understand that at this point there was still a single individual offshow, but no idea if it went onshow elsewhere since or has passed away.

I saw one sandpiper in with the spoonbills last Wednesday.

Asian Elephant bull, Nikolai is due to arrive from Hannover next week.

On Saturday a new male lion arrived at Artis to replace the male Caesar who was euthanized in August. He is still being kept behind the scenes to get used to his new surroundings and the two females.

On a side note, a clip has surfaced showing one of the resident lionesses at Artis killing a heron that landed on the lion terrace. Apparently this occurs somewhat regularly at Artis.

I guess one could call this accidental enrichment, right?
