That's exactly what you see. This room is a coastal room, and I didn't realise kookaburras were a type of kingfisher until I was here! There are some very bizarre combinations in artis, some seem to work (like this one and a bird aviary with bats in) and others seem a bit dangerous (a few snake enclosures with lizards). Can't say I'd do it myself, but it's interesting.
Ajabu, the newborn chimp, born on the 23rth of march, past away yesterday. The reason is currently unknown, as the chimps are still mourning. Dissection can not be done untill they are finished.
Can anyone tell me the names of the chimps currently at the Artis Zoo?
I'm sure they're somewhere up here, but I can't seem to find them!
Would help me a lot!
The Zoo is asking for donations to build a new Elephant exhibit in the space that is used as the car park. No images of what the exhibit will look like.
In the past this space was going to be used to make new exhibits for the Cat species in the park.
When I was at the Zoo last year their was talk of putting glass viewing round the Lion exhibit and filling in the moat to make more room, does anyone know if this is still the plan.
@Bongo never heard that plan for the lion exhibit. But I think there is still some space reserved for big cats on the car park, I do not think the whole car park will be transformed into the elephant exhibit
During February 5 burrowing owls hatched at the Birdhouse. Now the young are old enough to leave the nest-burrow and can be seen by the visitors.
New in the collection are a few Speckled Padlopers ( Homopus signatus ), the smallest tortoise. Adult females are 11 cm and adult males even smaller : 6 to 8 cm ! Because they have a very limited distrubution in South Africa, this is a very rare species so let's hope Amsterdam will be succesfull with them.
Yesterday March 9 2013 was a big day for Artis Zoo. For the first time since 74 years Komodo dragons arrived at the zoo ! An - for me - unknown number of 2011-born animals take up the tradition of Amsterdam Zoo with this species.
In 1926 Artis became the first zoo worldwide which could show this legendary lizard to the public. Between 1926 and 1939 a number was kept, but during and after the Second World War no new animals could be obtained.
The sexes of the new animals are stil unknown but hopefully a pair is among them so serious attemps can be made to breed this endangered species.
