Artis Royal Zoo Artis Zoo News

For goodness me, it is a kid's toy! It has been rather very effective for transmitting knowledge and getting kids awed about our Planet. You might like to see some of the videos made in which he and friends surface. The last one is him with a friend going to the Planet Sok.
I wish I knew Dutch and got to watch the full adventure. I really regret not bringing him home with me when I went to artis.

The College of B&W (=municipal cabinet) is not willing to give Artis a 10 million euro loan and insists that that is the task of the national government. The coalition consists of GroenLinks ("GreenLeft"), D66 (centre), PvdA ("Labour") and SP ("Socialist Party"). Curiously enough, the local PvdA in Rotterdam was extremely vocally supportive of the Zoo there and all these parties voted in favour of giving the Rotterdam Zoo their 10 million euro loan, even if SP did express some criticism.

Amsterdam has a lot of similar (cultural) organizations like Artis that it would have to support if chooses to do so. Furthermore, the financial position of the municipality of Amsterdam is currently extremely weak. Budget cuts of around 350M. So I think there is also not much money available for support, loans, etc. So I can understand their reasoning to make the support of zoos a national issue.

You are forgetting one fundamental: Artis Zoo is technically owned by the Amsterdam City. I am currently red-headed over the lacklustre response from the Mayor's Office and the Amsterdam municipal administration. They like to show up when there is a nice party at Artis ..., but when push gets to shove they are no where. Incidentally, the Municipality has been cutting the Artis Zoo budget for years already ..., nog something recent. Absolutely the wrong approach and indicative how municipal, provincial and national administrations view our cultural and natural heritage and educational facilities.

Saturday I went to Artis and a few things caught my attention:

-The former Alpine marmot enclosure already has now residents, a pair of Himalayan monal-pheasants (Lophophorus impejanus). I am not sure whether they are the same pair that lives in the pheasantry or if it's a new pair.
-I am pretty sure that the black-tailed prairie dogs have left the zoo, I didn't see them and all the information signs were gone at the enclosure.
-I also noticed to 'large scale' maps in the zoo, one is located next to the bridge between the pelican and gibbon enclosures and the other one is near the butterfly house.
-The enclosure of the Williams' dwarf gecko (Lygodactylus williamsi) was empty indicated by a sign in the enclosure.
-Some information about the renovation of the aquarium, they are for so far I understand still planing on starting the renovation next year (maybe a bit downscaled). This means that the aquarium will be closed at the beginning of 2021 and that all animals will be moved to different zoos or enclosures.
-The new indoor gibbon enclosure is almost finished, you can now walk around it and it looks really good! However on the other side of the enclosure (facing the Dutch Polder aviary) you have a small fries stand, which is incorporated in the enclosure building. I am getting a little bit annoyed by all the food stands Artis has been building/opening over the last couple of years. I understand that people want to buy something to eat or drink and it's a good way to increase the zoos income. But most of the times I visit Artis they are either closed or barely anyone buys something, therefore a few stands have also been closed over the years... I would rather see Artis spend money on improving current enclosures than on building more food stands...

I know this is not news but I really just love ARTIS's mascot. I just love how he seems simple yet cute.
-Some info for PossumRoach you can now buy Artis de Marsis in de zoo store (the alien relative of Artis de Partis). Three different types are available a keychain and two differrent sizes plushies.

Last saturday I went to Artis;

-Apparently the Java mouse deer that lived together with the two-toed sloth has passed away.
-A zookeeper confirmed to me that the black-tailed prairie dogs have left the zoo (also on zootierliste now).
-The Panther chameleon lives in the (former) bearded dragon enclosure, I only saw one individual. I don't know whether the bearded dragons have left the zoo, only one lives together with the frill-necked lizards.
-I also came across a third ''large scale'' zoo map at the intersection between the vulture aviary and the giraffe enclosure.

(btw this is my 200th post on ZooChat!)

So also no llamas and prairie dogs anymore... Terrible on-going downfall of the collection. Did he/she told you anything about the future of the enclosure (new species or reconstructing a new enclosure for a species already in the collection)?

I am not 100% sure about the llamas, forgot to ask the zookeeper about it. I also forgot to ask the keeper about any plans for the prairie dog enclosure. I am planning on going to Artis again this week (if the zoos are not closed down by the goverment...) and I will ask a zookeeper about it! It's a real shame that Artis is losing more and more species, which had decent enclosures.

A decrease in income here means a EURO 10 Mio. loss this year. This is a loss any non profit like the Artis zoo can barely muster or survive. As zoos are very much non-profit - for the benefit of the general public - organisations, the response from government, Provincial and Municipal has been lack lustre at best.

I am afraid, at this rate we are strangling our very own cultural and educational facilities and many will fall by the wayside. The institutions being very much part of our personal, traditional and national identities does not seem to be very high on the agenda of our current administrations, leaders and "crisis" managers - a sore sign of the old economy rationale gone truly bad. A good healthy society starts and ends with institutions like these in good staid. When they are gone what are we ... left with!

One can only conclude that current administrations seem to live and dream in days gone past a long time ago. In line with the infamous banking and financial services crisis of 2008/09 they are using the old medicines that have not worked in the past, nor will they now. The outcome has been the current waves of populisms and national identity politics worldwide. It certainly does not signal good governance and investing in a healthy society nor the road to any recovery.

Friday I visited Artis for the first time since the second reopening.

The highlight of the day was the new indoor gibbon enclosure, the gibbons moved to this enclosure last Tuesday. Honestly everything would have been an upgrade of the old outdated enclosure that used to be their indoor enclosure... I am really happy about the way this enclosure turned out, lots of plants and ropes/climbing structures! Also the large amounts of windows both for viewing and roof allow for a nice ambiance. Their enclosure also has two night/separation enclosures which aren't viewable. For the time being they can't access their outside enclosure (island) because the skybridge hasn't been constructed yet and I believe that the island will also be renovated.

Other changes have happend at the small mammal house (kleine zoogdierenhuis), the mesh fences for both the yellow-throated marten and white-faced saki outside enclosures have been replaced by glass windows. This is a huge improvement given that mesh fences are a bit outdated especially when plasic sheets are placed infront of them (due to the spread of corona). Also an information sign has been placed at the indoor enclosure of the white-faced saki's and according to the zoo magazine the Grey-handed Night Monkeys should also live in this enclosure.

Few other points of interest:
-An information sign has been placed at the Panther chameleon enclosure.
-According to the zoo magazine the Pampa (South-America enclosure) will be renovated, the main goal is to add more Pampa related plants. Also the Llama's have left the zoo and the Vicunas will return to the Pampa which currently live in the enclosure between the chimpanzee and penguin enclosures.
-Also a carousel can be found infront of the forest house, rides upon payment.

Went to Artis today and noticed the following.

-Work has begone on the gibbon island, the old bridge has been removed and several logs were being placed in the water.
-In my last post I mentioned that the grey-handed night monkeys now live in the small mammal house, however they are still not on display there (probably still in the forest house) eventhough they are signed now.

I finally had the chance to ask a zookeeper about this, but they currently have no plans for this enclosure/area.
