Artis Royal Zoo Artis Zoo News

Asian elephant female born at Artis :) !

It is a female, named Sanuk, and is reportedly doing well.
For those who are interested, the parents are Thong Thai (of course) and Mekong, the bull who left not long ago. Yindee, Thai's adult daughter, has met and is getting on with Sanuk :D

On Nov. 16 another Reticulated giraffe was born at Artis. It's a male and the mother already had 5 calves before so she is experienced. With the new calf the group now contains 10 animals.

For the first time in its long history a Trumpeter bird has hatched at Artis. The young - a Grey-winged ( aka Common ) trumpeter - was succesfully hand-raised.

Althrough the Atlantic nurse shark ( Ginglymostoma cirratum ) is a relative common sight in European collections, the species is only rarely bred. At Artis ( at least ) 5 eggs have been laid this year and one ( or maybe already more ) has hatched.
On Zootierliste Artis is not mentioned as being a keeper of the species (?).

That is because Artis keeps the smaller nurse shark species and not the big ones ;).

Had a closer look at the matter and you are right. Artis is keeping and breeding the Short-tailed nurse shark ( Pseudoginglymostoma brevicaudatum ), a species much rarer seem in European collections and many of the other keepers have got their specimens from Artis. Thanks for correcting this lintworm !

Building this one enclosure took about just as long as building a whole new zoo in Emmen :p
And of course for a fraction of that cost.

And for what it is worth: for the enormous amount of cash that the new Emmen facility ate up both my hometown zoo and that of Rotterdam could have fully refurbished all their listed buildings and brought those forward into world class exhibits.

About damn time! That jaguar exhibit has taken waaaaay too long to make, and I'm excited to see it being used by Mowgli and Rica :)
