Asa Zoo Asa Zoo, Hiroshima

Oh! The other Japanese zoo that holded this species until very recently, doesn't have it anymore?? :(

Jaza still lists Asa zoo and Safari land on their website. However Asa zoo's website refers their elephants as steppe elephants.

However, based on what I can tell from a sign in a instagram post of a visitor from jan 21, the zoo has one single forest elephant exhibited with African elephants

Anyways back to Asa. If google translate is accurate, then Asa zoo is also keeping a tapir that lavks a diaphragm and has a very sensitive heart.

Does Asa only keep one Pere David’s Deer?

Yes, unfortunately Asa has only 1 Pere David’s Deer left.
The number of this species has been declining, and will probably no longer be able to see them in the near future unless we somehow import from overseas zoos.

Here's a list of Pere David’s Deers in Japan:

Kumamoto:
Chopper (Male, born 2013)
Arisa (Female, born 2004)

Asa:
Asuka (Male, born 2009)

Tama:
Aoba (Male, born 2007)

Wow, Tama only has one. I thought it had more.

I get that Pere David's deer these days have been re-introduced back to PR of China in various semi-captive status reserves and 2+ wild state hard/soft release areas along the Yang-Tse-Kiang river. However, no denying for Japanese zoos there is value in conserving a small stock of Pere David's deer in their zoos. Is there not any effort to bring the last representatives together at one larger zoo and/or import a few deer from overseas zoos to make up 1-2 breeding groups?

I think a similar situation exists with the Przewalski's horses in Japanese zoos .... I am afraid. Allthough in that case Tokyo Tama Zoo does maintain a breeding herd (Tokyo Tama) and another holder (Chiba) keeps surplus individuals.

BTW: What is the general situation with deer species in Japanese zoos (sika suibspecies, musk deer, muntjac species, other Central or East Asian larger deer species)?

There are no musk deer kept in Japan. Only Reeve’s muntjac are kept among muntjacs. Some non native subspecies of sika are kept in a handful of facilities. There are no Rucervus nor Rusa kept. I believe red deer are kept but they too are also rare and probably not of pure lineage. Only species of axis kept are chital.

The list below shows a list of deer designated as invasive in Japan making the acquisition and trade of the species very difficult. One thing to consider is that this list as a whole uses outdated taxonomy. Despite being regularly updated the genus of outdated binomials remain the same. So chances are that Rusa and Rucervus are also included on this list.

Are there no deers that can make a match?

Why is Pere David’s classed as ‘invasive’?
