asian and african elephants together

The Louisville Zoo in Kentucky keeps a single female Asian with a single female African.

Chester had a hybrid calf in 1977 i think? And Paignton used to have Asian and African but the female Asian Gay died leaving just Duchess the African.

Really? I have never heard of an african-asian elephant cross. If it is true, that is fascinating.

Of course it's true. Unfortunately I don't know how to post a link but if you visit the blog page of Dr Karl Shuker he has a long article and photos of Motty.

It was an odd looking elephant, it had traits of both species that are used to set them apart, from memory (it's been a while since i've seen the pictures) It had an african elephant forehead (asians have the two domes) and the asian elephant hump in the back (african have what is called a saddle back).

Woodland park zoo- 1 African, 2 asian. Asian calf Hansa died of the herpes virus in 2007.

Also before St. Louis started breeding elephants they had an African. Could this explain the herpes virus that is affecting both Jade and Maliha?

i was not aware that St. Louis had ever housed an AFrican. Do you know the name and when?

I'm seeing two Africans for St Louis Zoo on the Elephant Encyclopaedia website, both deceased in the 1970s:

Clara Belle (died 1977 aged about twenty-two years)
Herman (died 1972 aged about sixteen years).

Both were wild caught.
