I am not really a specialist but I would argue that female groups are probably safer to mix with other species (especially hoofstock). Males have periods of must and they are per se hard to manage. Now Imagine putting other animals in the mix with these highly aggressive males during must.
 
Magdeburg kept their African elephants with bat-eared foxes and impalas. But the foxes are now off-show (ZTL)
