Asian Elephants in Europe 2020

Kein Happyend bei der zweiten Elefantengeburt in diesem Jahr | Zoo Zürich
And another very sad new! Farha gave birth to a calf in Zurich, but after an hour it was found dead with great head damage. This probably suggests that the mother killed the calf. But the birth was also present Ceyla Himali and she should prevent it. Either the calf was unviable, or Ceyla simply did not prevent it. But it is a huge loss. It was a cow.:(:(:(:(:(Hopefully will get pregnant again soon.

The head trauma suggests that the calf was either a victim of an accident or an intentional attack. But it is unkown if it was the mother, the grandmother or the 3 year old sister. Older siblings are sometimes very rough with newborn calves.

Absolutely terrible news :( A huge blow not only for Farah's small family, but the European population on the whole, considering the little calf was a female.

Also @Jaxton yes, the two groups are kept separately. From what I hear, Indi and Ceyla do not get along.
Yes, it is a huge loss for the entire European Asian elephant population.

Indi and Ceyla Himali live separately. Both are dominant and lead their own family herd. This cow would have grown Ceyla's herd. Unfortunately, it remains only three members. Perhaps after two or three years Farha will give birth to another calf.
Indi have a larger herd. It's her little son Umesh and daughters Chandra and Omysha. Now we just have to hope that Indi will help young Omysha in childbirth and it can do without complications.

So they dont have CCTV in the elephant barn?

Mekong from Emmen will move to Rapperswil inSwitzerland this year, because he has not shown interest in Swhe Zin. But I think Mingalar Oo and Ma Yay Yee are pregnant again. Timber from Rotterdam will move to Emmen. There are Bangka and Trong Nhi certainly also pregnant, in the autumn Timber mated with them. Fahim from Belleawerde will arrive in Rotterdam. After his departure, the local elephant exhibit will be reconstructed. I think this is a very good move. And Rapperswill got at least temporarily a chance to reproduce Sandry and maybe Kalaya.

I learned that Kiran in Leipzig has a growth problem or something. Can anyone confirm this to me? It would be really bad luck, the elephant breeding in Leipzig still has problems.
"Mitte April hatte Kiran sein Geburtsgewicht immer noch nicht wieder erreicht und es wurden erhöhte Leukozytenwerte (Indikator für Entzündungen) festgestellt. Daher wurde eine Behandlung mit Antibiotika begonnen."

Is it true? On elewiki claims that French television announced in April that Nina in le Pal is pregnant and expects a calf in 2021. But I suppose so, because it's likely.

"Am 28.02.2019 kam als neuer Zuchtbulle Upali au dem Zoo Dublin, Irland. Der Zoo hofft auf weitere Kälber von Nina. In einem französischen Fernsehbericht wurde im April 2020 Ninas erneute Schwangerschaft verkündet, die voraussichtlich 2021 abgeschlossen sein wird. Vater ist Upali."

It's great to hear that an exchange of bulls is happening between Knie's Children's Zoo (Rapperswil), Wildlands Adventure Zoo (Emmen), the Rotterdam Zoo, and Bellewaerde (Ieper). With Fahim moving from Ieper to Rotterdam, Timber moving from Rotterdam to Emmen, and Mekong moving from Emmen to Rapperswil, is Thisiam moving to another institution for breeding or will he remain at Rapperswil? Also, since Thisiam has yet to cover Sandry and Kalaya in the nearly five years he's been at Rapperswil, is Thisiam reproductively viable?

Unfortunately, yes. The information on EleWiki came from the Leipzig Zoo's internet series 'Elefant, Tiger & Co.' It's quite disheartening to hear that Kiran isn't gaining weight, and has yet to surpass his birth weight. Hopefully, the veterinarians will be able to figure out why Kiran isn't gaining weight and put him on supplements to support growth and weight gain. It would be absolutely devastating to lose Kiran, especially after the passing of Ben Long.

Other than the information on EleWiki, there are no sources that state Nina is indeed pregnant and expecting in 2021. However, it's very probable that she is as Upali arrived at Le Pal in February of 2019 and was seen breeding with Nina shortly there after. I'm interested to know where one can find that french television source. Has Le Pal Park announced the pregnancy on their Facebook page?

There's one thing that worries me about Nina's unconfirmed pregnancy; will she be able to support the extra weight of the calf during the pregnancy after sustaining that devasting leg injury from Maxim, the park's previous bull, nearly five years ago? Fortunately, after 10 months of treatment, she fully recovered and was able to support her full body weight. Also, it's been nearly four years since she's recovered from the injury so she should be able to support the weight of a pregnancy but I still have uncertainties.
