Here is another article about Ekol. They say that Yoma has lived separately from the others so far, but now he will live with the others. (probably to get Cinta pregnant again) And that could lead to Ekol breed with Yoma. So they preferred to move her. It is possible that Ekol could get pregnant (her mother had her first calf at the age of five), but I find it very stupid. Although the zoo claims that the circus has good conditions for animals and will build an enclosure with a pool for Ekol, it is still a circus where it will do unnatural tricks and, most importantly, be alone. And I don't understand at all why Rostov is afraid of inbreeding, when their whole breeding is inbreeding. Cinta is Yoma's half-sister, but also not only Sitara's mother, but also her half-sister. They are all half-siblings of all. They have a common father, Ankhor. They should have exchanged bulls with the Moscow Zoo. It would benefit both. Rostov would no longer have a related bull, and Moscow could breed Pobeda.

Naing Thein is also expected to move, but it is also unknown when and where. But Leipzig is also talking about getting more elephants. I think it is very likely that Kewa will move there with her family from Tierpark Berlin.

Very sad news is coming. Unfortunately, Ma Yay Yee miscarried. According to the zoo, this was expected, because some problems were observed a few days ago. Ma Yay Yee is closely monitored because she has less appetite and is not behaving completely normally. Maybe it's just her sadness and nervousness and not any health problems. I think, but it might be known whether the calf was a bull or not. Now only Mingalar Oo is prenant. Let's hope it can finally be a cow.

Very sad news to hear about Ma Ya Yee indeed :( Fingers crossed she recovers well and her next pregnancy with Timber will go better.

However, in much, MUCH better news, two more pregnancies have been confirmed, from a very valuable group of animals! I heard of this some months ago, but nothing was confirmed until now. Both Douanita and Sita are pregnant at Osnabruck! Sire to both is Luka. Douanita is a founder with only 3 living calves and one grand calf, and Luka is essentially a founder (only surviving calf for both wild caught parents) with only 2 living calves and two grand calves.

I can't be more excited, as these are probably two of my most highly anticipated pregnancies, personally. Osnabruck can finally grow out its breeding herd as it has been wanting to do for YEARS, and has plans for extensive expansions of its elephant exhibit in the near future. This is also one of the more genetically valuable breeding groups out there, and Luka isn't getting any younger at 47 years old. Excellent news all around.

Bull, Chang has died at Copenhagen. He was 39 years old and had been unwell for sometime (there is a video on Copenhagen Zoo's Facebook page of him having a procedure on 16th July). Despite vet treatment, his condition deteriorated and he passed away this morning.

He was born at Copenhagen and moved to Chester as a sub-adult. He then spent time at Le PAL and Planckendael before returning to Copenhagen in 2017

That's terrible news. I'm very sad. RIP Chang.
 
It might sound mean, but I'm not sad. Chang produced some of the dumpiest looking elephants I've ever seen. His unfortunately prolific son Po Chin in particular is a simply unattractive animal, with a disproportionately large head, tiny, oddly pinched tusks, a fat body, and short legs.

Chang is survived by 7 (soon to be 8) offspring, 8 grand offspring, 2 great grand offspring, and a full brother, so regardless of his looks, he leaves a sizeable legacy behind.

I went to Paira Daiza last year and noticed from the labelling that Po Chin was in their herd, but failed to see him. But very recently I saw a photo of him and he does indeed look a very strange shape for a breeding bull. His mother at Chester was, from memory, the big female 'Jangoli' who came there from Flamingoland in Yorkshire. So I don't think it is her shape he has inherited. Chang was tuskless and not the most impressive bull I've seen either but sorry to hear of his death nevertheless.

I also heard that 'Po Chin' isn't a foreign name but that for some reason, perhaps because of their support, he was apparently named after a local building firm Pochin, and the name then split to give it a more exotic feel.

Gandhi is straight up ugly. Probably the ugliest bull elephant I've ever seen.

Also the looks don't come from their sire, they come from the mother. Chieng Mai was a handsome bull with MASSIVE tusks. His daughters Irma and Schottzie, and son Plaisak (half sisters and brother to Chang and Gandhi) are fine looking animals, and all Irmas calves are beautiful as well, and the bulls all have good tusks. Ida (mother to Chang and Gandhi) was an ugly elephant with a stocky build and big head, and I guess that look was very dominant, since Chang and Gandhi, and most of Chang's calves, look a lot like her.
