Elephant cow Delhi in Rapperswil died at the age of 54 years due to worsening old age.

Delhi was born in Hannover zoo in 1968. She spent most of her life in Cirkus Knie and last years she lived in Knies Kinderzoo with other cirkus elephants.

Very sad news. Now there are only two daughters of the bull Mohti from Hannover, sisters Tima (55) and Indra (48). But Delhi was 52 years old. She was born on March 19, 1968.
 
Sad news, older bull Nang Thein was euthanized at Copenhagen at the age of 40. He was largely blind and also suffering from arthritis and foot issues.

He leaves on a sizeable family tree however, with 8 living offspring, 11 grandoffspring, and another on the way this spring.

This now puts Copenhagen in an interesting situation now. Nang Thein was never to breed, he was to move into a bachelor group in Poland in the future, Copenhagen was merely holding him since they had the space to do so. Will this now expedite Copenhagen getting their new breeding bull, or will they opt to remain bull-less for a while, considering all three cows have calves ages 4 or younger. I guess we can only wait and see!

Indeed. However considering it was all upper middle aged animals, all recently transferred in with pre-existing issues (plus Chieng Mai, who was pushing 60), things could certainly be worse(although its still sad nonetheless!)

Luckily their core group is all younger, healthy animals, so fingers crossed they continue to do well, and there won't be anymore deaths for a good long time!
 
In Osnabrück Sita gave birth to a little bull on the 11th, her own 8th birthday. Unfortunately the calf had to be put down today. It is reported that the herd did not care about him at first, and when his mom later on did he did not want to drink.

Devastating news, especially being Sita's first calf. :(

Deep mourning on Schölerberg: On Thursday night, February 11th. the young of our elephant cow Sita was born, but did not want to drink even after long attempts. That's why our vets had to redeem the calf today. As early as Thursday morning, our biologists and veterinarians were worried because there was unrest in the elephant group. The newborn was in one corner of the house and the rest of the group in the other. After mother Sita got closer and closer to her boy and finally took good care of him, one hurdle was over. But our zookeepers and biologists then had to find out that the calf absolutely refuses to drink from its mother's teat. The zoo employees tried to lure the young animal to the teat with a bottle filled with elephant milk, but it braced itself against it with all four legs. Bottle rearing is unfortunately not an option for Asian elephants, because the colostrum that mothers initially produce is very important for the development of newborn elephants. If they do not get this milk, they usually only live a few months or years, as they quickly developed infections or diseases such as liver failure or glass bones. The animal's suffering would only be delayed. After Sita's young animal continued to degrade in the last few days and on Monday, February 15. also got diarrhea, our vets and biologists had to take their responsibility towards the animal seriously and make a difficult decision and deliver it from its suffering. Then Sita was able to say goodbye to her young animal in peace.

Good god, another bull?! Mingalar Oo has had six calves, and every single one has been a bull. Yeesh. From what I can gather, she is no longer going to be breeding due to over-representation, shame she'll never get a daughter. Fingers crossed Ma Ya Yee or Swe Zin can produce some girls with Timber.

What you said about Mingalar Oo is true, this is her last calf. But the last pregnancy of Ma Yay Yee was also her last. They are not going to breed her for the same reason as for Mingalar Oo.

I think since she had an abortion, it's possible that she'll change her mind about having another calf.
