I hate to say it, but I have a feeling Yindee might be a non-breeder. I've seen footage of Nikolai successfully breeding her, yet she has not conceived to date.

Honestly, I doubt any of the cows at Artis are pregnant right now. They don't have a *ton* of space available, and with the EEP already pushing for facilities to slow down breeding as well, I doubt we'll see another calf at Artis for another four or five years. Of course that's just conjecture, but its a well educated guess.

Yes Artis is tight on space but at least they tend to get females as compared to Emmen who get so many boys for some reason.

Hopefully Nikolai leaves the zoo leaving someone pregnant. We need more girls.

There is now confirmation from Artis about the move of Nikolai. They say that the move has been initiated on the recommendation of the EEP, following the advice that the bull should no longer produce offspring in the current herd. So I guess that also means that none of the cows are pregnant at the moment.

Does anyone know EEP’s plan with the Radza sons? He had so many. Only two of his daughters have produced. Radza definitely had a set of magnificent tusks!

All I know is that Einga-Tha may go to another zoo this year. But that was briefly mentioned in an interview a while back, and I haven't heard anything about it since.

Sad news from Augsburg. Burma, 53 years old cow, was euthanised due to worsening osteoarthritis. She almost didn't eat anymore.
The zoo is still home to a very old Targa (66), who is gradually getting used to two more cows. So far, the two pairs have lived separately.

The calf at Rotterdam is a male. The calf was born at 00:03 (12:03 AM) on the 5th of may.

I noticed that several elderly Asian cows died about a year after moving to a new exhibit.

Can anybody with knowledge of many elephant lives, comment is it something regular? I can imagine that an elderly elephant is stressed by new surroundings (even much better ones!) and does not adapt.

Burma did not move at all. The new elephant facility in Augsburg is right next to the old enclosure and barn. The old parts are unchanged. Burma and Targa continued to live in the old parts while the 2new females live in the new barn and paddock. They had the possibility of contact over the fence but not more. The Augsburg females were given th choice to explore the new parts but as far as I know only Targa went over to the new barn.

It is as Yassa wrote, Burma did not change her exhibit. Targa was much more curious about the new area than Burma was, who did not make any attempts to enter the new area. In order to not have her alone they kept Targa with her in the small and old area. It is pretty safe to assume that Targa will now explore the new exhibit and that they will try to keep her together with the two cows from Berlin.

Sad news. I must say he never looked really healthy from the start. At least in the pics I have seen since I am in USA. Can anyone say how he looked recently?

Awful news. I feel terrible for the staff at Leipzig. This is the sixth calf they've lost in the last nine years. The only calf to survive in Leipzig in modern times has been Voi Nam. Is there a reason for the score of calves lost in Leipzig? I hope this trend will not continue now that they have the basis of a breeding herd with one bull and four reproductive females.

Kiran is ‚only‘ the 4th calf to die in Leipzig. And the high death rate is essily explained, the first 3 calves were born by Hoa who turned out to be aggressive against her offspring. She killed the first, fatally injured the second and while the third was rescued by the keepers, handraising failed (that is sadly the norm for elephants). Kirans sudden death looks an awful lot like EEHV... he was a tad young for EEHV but its still the most likely scenario.

Some of the most horrible news that I have heard the UK is now passing law's banning keeping elephant's in zoo's and this is due dumb*** animal rights group's most likely the born Free foundation

Even Kiran was a weak calf that required supplemental feeding early on and only made it through a hairline.... before.

I personally think the entire Vietnamese elephant herd of old at Leipzig is a dead end for reproduction unfortunately.

I am also no advocate for various family herds at one zoo. Even so, I wish elephant management and keeping staff all the best here!
