Asian Elephants in Europe 2021

Well I recently saw a photo of Sandry (Hussin x Cluady) and she was looking very round on the sides

COVID weight maybe?

If she is indeed pregnant, I wonder who is the dad? Mekong or Thisiam? Mekong has been there since May 2020. So that would be only 13 months.

Its odd - she is the only breedable female in the herd of older cows. Her daughter is 7 or 8.

In an article after the arrival of Mekong it said that he was very interested with Sandry while Thisiam showed a lot of interest in Sundry's daughter Kalaya, so the most likely sire would be Mekong if she is pregnant. Also since Kalaya is now around 8 years old she is no longer nursing off her mother and Sandry would no longer be producing milk for her, so the fact that her breasts do still show signs of milk could likely mean that she is pregnant.

There *is* a decent chance Sandry is pregnant, but I wouldn't get too excited about her being very far along right now. She's just a thick animal, and Kalaya is actually still nursing as well, so her tits never really went away.

I've been thinking she's been pregnant for the past 3 years, and I haven't been right yet, lol.

Münster Zoo confirmed that Nikolai has arrived from Amsterdam, while Alexander is on his way to Lodz.

I wonder how Alexander would do with so many young bulls at once after being used as a breeding bull for so long.

Is Alexander now supposed to finish his life at Lodz ? He's one of the oldest breeding bull in Europe and has 11 offsprings alive, so it wouldn't be surprising if he's finished his breeding job. It's a good idea for me to mix an old and experimented bull with some teenage bulls, it worked really well at Zurich Zoo with Maxi and Thai, so why would there be any problems with the bulls at Lodz ?

Alexander is the Dad & Granddad to the Elephants at Dublin Zoo.Alexander mated with Yasmin and Bernhardine while at Rotterdam Zoo, and became Father to Anak and Asha respectfully. Despite fathering Asha she was born at Dublin, because Bernhardine was pregnant when she departed Rotterdam, and arrived at Dublin in 2006.Due to this Alexander is not just a Dad but consequently a Granddad.

I suppose that will be the case. It would not be wise to move him elsewhere.

Speaking of Lodz, does anyone know if they have updated or built a new elephant enclosure. The one they have is outdated and certainly wouldn’t be able to hold three bulls, two of being hormonal teenage bulls.

Lodz has the elephant enclosure in their new "Orientarium" - I think it's new and not updated.

Alexander was very laid back in Münster. I think he was chosen for the young bulls due to his character and the good chance that it works with him.

Like @Pongo said, they have just completed their 'Orientarium'. It is quite the exhibit! I think it looks pretty nice and I'm very excited to see the finished product. I found this video of it on youtube.

That looks really nice, and the underwater viewing looks really cool! Are there any other zoos with underwater viewing for elephants?

Thanks. It does look very eye appealing. So basically it will be a zoo under one roof? How much space will the elephants get?

i like the concept of “Oreintarium”.

Will Lodz house a breeding group in the future ? Or will it keep housing a bachelor group ?
Because the enclosure looks perfect for bulls and the EEP needs more places where to house the extra bulls.

Lodz has buit it with breeding herd in mind. But EEP decided to give them only bachelor group for now.

Everyone who builds right now needs to integrate a part for a bachelor group to solve the problem of the many young bulls. Since breeding is slowed down it can be that Lodz has to wait some years before getting a herd.
