Asian Elephants in Europe 2022

This is very sad. He was an incredibly successful bull. He had a huge number of offsprings and lived to a truly blessed age. Along with it, a large piece of the history of elephant breeding in the zoo is leaving. Of the most successful couple of all time, only Warda remains, she is even two years older. RIP dear Motek and a lot of health and strength Warda. :(:(:(

Btv. It is quite interesting that the zoo did not report this sad news anywhere. Zoo is probably not that shared with the world. However, I assume this is true given his age.

It will be interesting to see what they do to replace Motek. They have la petite, la Belle and lelana. Or they are waiting for his son to grow up. Werda haven’t produced any reported calves in several years but she’s already well represented.

So what girls does he prefer? That may explain why he was not really successful in his previous location. I think it was port ly.. something. It’s been a while and I can’t roll it off my tongue!

He was at Port Lympne from 1977 to 2004. He sired 6 calves there, but all died very early on.

He must be one of the least represnted breeding bulls in Europe at the moment, with five calves, and a young grandchild. I don't imagine they'll be retiring him anytime soon.

yes thats the place and yes all died. One cow died giving birth as well.

They'll likely receive a bull in the future, although I don't see this happening until Philo gets a little older. Warda is currently 54 years old, and adding to the fact she's well represented, I don't see her breeding again. Breeding will likely continue (once a new bull arrives), through La Petite and La Belle.

The cow that he has bred the most with is Shu Thu Zar they have had four calves together a stillborn male in 2008, their daughter Bindi born in 2012, son La Min Kyaw born in 2016, and another daughter Leev Ma Rie born in 2022.

so they are phasing out of the Africans and focusing on Asians. It will be hard to get a bull to Israel.

The female's name was Veda and she died after giving birth to her first calf, of which was stillborn, only at the age of 17.

It's interesting to note, out of Bindu's six calves there, four were stillborn, including twins!

so basically he’s mating with only one cow.

Yes, but he sired two more calves, his eldest living daughter Maha Kumari with Thi Ha Phyu, and his eldest living son Khin Yadanar Min with Aye Chan May

yes. Thi and Maha moved then thi passed away. Aye Chan may has been moved as well. That is why I said he basically has only one cow at Koln to breed with. I should have said it better.

Aye Chan Mae was sent to Pairi Daiza, ending her breeding with Bindu; otherwise they may well have bred again given the chance. She’s since produced a further two offspring.

Just to clarify, Warda is already 64, so a really wonderful age.

I am also curious how Ramat Gan will approach the situation without a bull. It would be sad if previously the most successful breeding outside of Asia ended.

I hope Ramat Gan seize the opportunity to build upon the nucleus of the successful breeding herd they have. Lalana and Latangi are nine years old and La Belle is 16 years old, so while they have time on their side, it’d also be great to see breeding recommence.

La Petite is 37 and could easily join her daughters and granddaughter in breeding again, now her latest calf has just turned two.

I don't know how Ramat Gan is with a place for bulls, but it is possible that they only have place for one bull. Motek was one of the oldest bulls in the world and it was not possible to relocate him, so they let him live to end and now they will be looking for a new bull for his daughters (And perhaps for La Petite to. After all, Warda had a calf in 2006 when she was 48 years old).

I would say a very likely contender for Ramat Gans next bull would be Gabi who is currently living at the Gaziantep zoo in Turkey. He is currently 17 years old, and is unrelated to all of RG’s animals. Moreover, Gaziantep has a second bull from Ramat Gan, Pili, so I could see RG sending over Philo in a few years to replace Gabi and providing companionship for Pili.

Correction Leev Ma Rie was born in 2020
