I just saw a video of Tarak at Koln breeding Shu Thu Zar on social media. It didn’t take him long.
I saw the same videos. He didn’t actually breed her, just sort of went through the motions without successful penetration. Given her behaviour and appearance, while she was tolerant of his advances, I don’t think she’s cycling right now.

I’m actually quite curious to see how Koln proceeds with breeding. Obviously Tarak will breed with Bindi, Tong Koon and Marie, but I wonder how they will approach Malar and STZ. Bindu is more genetically valuable than Tarak, and also significantly older. I’m curious if they will continue to breed him with STZ since he will actually breed her, or they’ve decided to just retire him completely. Same goes for Malar. Now that she’s an experienced mother, and fairly mature size wise, I’m curious if they’d be willing to try her with Bindu, or just axe the idea and go with Tarak instead.

Hmm I couldn’t see clearly enough about the penetration but he was showing proper behavior at least.
I would love to see Malar have another baby. She’s my favorite out of all of them. I think Bindu is off limits now due to the incident.

I don’t know who Marie is?

I think on the female side they will mainly have a permit to breed with Bindi. I don't think the video with Shu Thu Zar was for serious breeding purposes - her matriline lives with Bindi and Leev Ma Rie in the future, and Shu Thu Zar is out of the set breeding age. For Cologne it makes sense to focus on this line for the future for sure. Kree.., Thong Koon and Laongdaw will not have a breeding permit with a high probability - they are beyond the set breeding age and it would not make sense to start a new breeding line at their age. The big question is how it goes on with Marlar. In my opinion she should move elsewhere with Laongdaw (given that they are still close) and form an own breeding line at another place instead of having two lines in Cologne.

Does oanybody know why one of the bulls in Pairi Daiza, Chamundi, isn't be use to breed? His father is wild caught and hasn't any other ofpsring. His mother is alose wild caught and has a few daughters but with no surviving second generation.

He’s a behavioural non breeder. Although he at least seemed to get along ok with the cows at Munster, it’s not been the case for any other facility he’s been at. At Amersfoort all he did was chase the cows around and frighten them, and I’m assuming similar events occurred at Pairi Daiza as well.

Which is a shame, as he is indeed quite genetically valuable, and a very good looking bull on top of it. I have heard that they have been able to get good semen collections from him though, so fingers crossed he does end up with the calves via AI at some point.

The little bull at Leipzig has finally been given a name

"AKITO - Autumn Child".
"Our little bull elephant has a name."
Mother Pantha cracked the pumpkin with the name hidden in it. Of course, Akito helped out, and then bathed himself in the "Paddle Baptismal Pool".

Mun at Copenhagen is fighting herpes.

Here you go:

From Copenhagen socials:

Baby elephant in intensive treatment for herpes virus.

The baby elephant Mun has been in intensive care since Wednesday morning, after she started showing signs of illness on the night of Wednesday. We immediately started treatment under the suspicion that it was elephant herpes before we could get answers to her blood tests. Unfortunately, today's tests have shown that we were right in our suspicions.

Elephant herpes is a complex and aggressive bleeding disease that has claimed the lives of approx. half of baby elephants born in zoos and an increasing number of wild elephants. We therefore do absolutely everything we can to keep Mun out of the tragic statistics.

It will therefore not be possible to see the female elephants in their facility for the next few days, while the team of zookeepers and vets is given peace of mind to continue the treatment.

We update continuously here on Facebook.

@Zoofan15 thank you. I hope Mun will recover because of their proactive care.

I hope so too - though from what I’ve seen the majority of the calves that have survived are those that have tested positive via blood work before they’ve even started showing symptoms.

Any news about Mun?
Or is the situation still critical after all these days?
Things are still critical, but fortunately she is still alive and battling the virus so far. Given it’s been ~6 days since the initial flare up, this is the earliest I would begin to feel the first tentative bits of hope about her survival, but it’s going to be very much touch and go for a while yet!

Still critical.

Power on Mun! You can do this!

Poor little guy doesn’t look well. I wish they would do this in a crate instead of darting him.

Its a great sign that she is still alive on day 7 since getting sick with EEHV-HD. By far most calves are already dead at that point. I am really optimistic now that she will make it!!

Mun is still sick but thankfully is responding well to treatment

"The whole herd is affected by the lengthy treatment, which also requires some anesthesia and blood clots from the adults. Mun is still very sick, but she has proven to be a true fighter and is responding well to the treatment. Here on day 10, we have reached much further than you would normally expect from such a course, so we remain cautiously optimistic."
