Asian Elephants in Europe 2023

Absolutely SPECTACULAR news! This calf being a female is a massive win in so many ways.

Not only is she rather genetically valuable to the European population, but she is also the first female calf for Sang Raja after a rather unfortunate string of 5 (four still living) males calves. Of course, given the ratio of male vs female births in the EEP the past few years overall, any female calf is a win, let alone a more valuable one like this.

This is also an awesome win for Koln, who is now extremely well set up to gradually move towards a completely matriarchal herd led up by Shu Thu Zar, and her daughters and grand daughters, which is of course the goal of any facility breeding elephants.

An Asian elephant bull died in Emmen last Monday afternoon. This happened during the animal's relocation.

Two older elephant bulls from Emmen were to be transported to another zoo. While moving the second animal in the moving container, it was necessary to sedate the animal; unfortunately, he did not wake up from this narcosis.

The other bull, however, is on its way to its new home. Where that is and which elephants are involved has not been mentioned.

Bad news.
Maybe one of the rare descendant of Radza and Htoo Kin Aye. Not to be hoped!!

Probably it's either Einga-Tha (Radsch x Htoo Kin Aye) or Ein She Min (Radsch x Ma Ya Yee).

The elephants are reportedly Einga Tha and Radza Junior. They were due to move to a zoo in Italy last Monday. Radza Junior is the elephant who died.

While it’s not logically responsible I wish Emmen could send another bull in Radza Jr’s place. They already have too many bulls and need to focus on getting more females.

RIP Radza Jr.

What is the social structure at Koln, especially regarding unrelated females Tong Koon and Marlar, and Kreeblamduan and Laongdaw?

the very old information I have from someone that was reliable was that Kreeblamduan was an “angry” elephant. She speculated that she had lost a calf before importation and blames the humans for it. If this is true, I have no idea why she never conceived at Koln. Kree was the one who killed the other cow years ago.

Koln should have removed all of the older non breeding cows instead of leaving them in the herd.

Jack, the 2 years old bull of Le Pal, has died from EEHV.
Oh no :( The lineage of the late, great Siam has truly struggled to take off.

Only two surviving offspring, a son and a daughter. Thisiam is a stunning bull in his prime, but so far hasn’t quite gotten the knack for natural breeding (however that seems to be improving with time). Nina at Le Pal is a natural breeder, but hasn’t had much luck with offspring survival (although she is very lucky in other regards, too). A daughter and a son both deceased of herpes, her second pregnancy resulted in a miscarriage that remained in utero, which is effectively a career ender for most cows in terms of breeding ability, and a severely broken back leg due to a kick from another elephant.

Yet despite that, she is a resilient cow. In something that is nothing short of a miracle, she managed to conceive again after her second failed pregnancy, and presumably expelled the retained fetus with the birth of her second successful calf, and has since gone on to breed without issue. And despite a broken leg that would be a death sentence for most animals, through amazing veterinary care and pure luck, Nina managed to recover and is back in good health and mobility again. She does also have one surviving offspring, a young bull, Tom, who despite being rather dumpy looking, carries on the Siam legacy, and who also provides tremendous support for his mother, which is something the poor girl desperately deserves.

Does anyone know if any of the breeding cows at Pairi Daiza (Farina, Amithi, Nang Faa, Malay, Soraya) are pregnant or have mated with the breeding bull Po chin in the last year? Or are they on a breeding break?

Normally Pairi Daiza has been put on a break to breed, however it wouldn't be the first time they don't follow the EEP. So I don't know. The cows you suggest and Po chin are all not genetically interesting and already plenty represented. The ones that would be interesting are Suzy, Sayang, Aye Chan May and Praya. However Praya is to old, and Sayang and Aye Chan May already have offspring so only Suzy is really interesting. But Po Chin is Chang's son so not really an interesting Bull to breed with further. Above all, there is a shortage of space for further family groups to hold.
