Asian Elephants in Europe 2024

Many of the zoos on your list don’t want a bull and don’t have the facilities to keep one:
- Karlsruhe
- Hannover (no breeding allowed with hybrid females)
- Burgers Zoo (keeps only old females)
- Benidorm (keeps only old females now)
- Fasano (Asian females are all old).

Hannover's elephant area is under reconstructions. It will be finished sometime in 2025. After it they want to keep a bull too. They have big boards in the zoo with these info.
In connection with the others, thanks for the update.

They want to have bulls in a bachelor group (one experienced and younger ones). Breeding is not intended though.

Sibu is moving to Safari Madrid? Does this mean he's retiring from breeding for now?
His stay in Artis is only temporary. He will stay there for about a year after which he will indeed move to Safari Madrid. He will become the adult bull (guiding bull) in the bachelor group there.

Can anyone tell which elephants in zoos are left-trunked and which elephants are right-trunked.
Left trunked means something like prefer to use their trunk to the left side.

You… aren’t really going to find that. Elephants only have one trunk, so it’s kind of impossible for them to be “left or right trunked”.

However that said, elephants can definitely be left or right tusked (or tushed, in the case of some Asian cows). It’s usually not super noticeable in captivity since we do tusk maintenance, but you can definitely tell with some animals. However I wouldn’t know any off the top of my head.

With that topic, don’t some elephants prefer to put hay (or roughage) tucked with one side of the tusks?

Actually it’s about the direction they move the tip of their trunk, some always curl it to the left and others to the right. Some scientists compare that to being left- oder righthanded.

Elephant bull Maurice will be leaving DierenPark Amersfoort in a few months. Where he will go has not been anounced. The zoo's curator told this in their own podcast. After his move, there won't be a new bul immediately, but there will be again in the longer term.
According to a keeper at the elephant talk in Amersfoort, Maurice is going to move to a German zoo.
According to posts in multiple Facebook groups, the Tierpark Hagenbeck magazine confirms that Maurice will become the new breeding bull at Tierpark Hagenbeck.

- Jana and Praya from Pairi Daiza moved to Casablanca in the end of September.

- Does anybody know why Chamundi didn't move to Augsburg Zoo with Ta Wan as it was planned? Will he stay in Pairi Daiza or he will move to another place?

- Did Belfast Zoo stop keeping elephants?

Hm, sad news. It’ll be interesting to see how Mauk and Manoa fare over the next couple weeks. Historically, when this happens at other facilities, it usually tends to decimate the population of younger animals…

Mauk and Manoa are currently separated from the family group as much as possible to avoid stress. Since a while, they had often been separated from the family group to form their own bachelor group. They are being watched closely.

I know a year or two ago the EEP mentioned creating a large bachelor herd of up to 20 individuals at I think La Reserva Sevilla but it could be a different Spanish zoo that I am mixing up. Is this still the case or have these plans been scrapped?
