Asian Elephants in Europe 2025

51-year-old Asian elephant cow Dunja has died at Burgers' Zoo. She was suffering from arthritis and several other old-age ailments and her situation deteriorated recently. It was therefore decided to put her to sleep for welfare reasons.

Tuberculosis possibly? At least he has a surviving daughter but she’s 13 so they need to bring in a bull asap. Sad situation. He’s full brother to Alexander.

great news I wonder if it’s a permanent or temporary move as in they move back to whipsnade after supporting Indali Hi Way with her first birth?

Now we wait to see who the bull is.

I’m happy that they have worked out a nice arrangement.
Reading the article it sounds like a permanent move, and one that was initially prompted by the situation of the elephants at Whipsnade rather than that at Chester. I did fear that this move was splitting up Whipsnade's herd for sake of the unfortunate scenario Chester have found their herd in (although that would still have been justified to improve the welfare of Indali and Maya), but I'm glad this is a solution that seems to be very beneficial for both zoos.

I wouldn't be surprised if we don't see a new breeding bull arrive at Chester until all 4 cows are settled together and the young bull Anjan has moved out.

yes the pair has been living separately already. So perhaps Chester zoo is willing to have two different matrilineal families. I was thinking they would want to stick with the Hi Way family in the long term. Anjan can stay with the new bull providing he’s gentle.

yes. No need to hurry with the bull. I expect they would want Karishma and Elizabeth pregnant soon. Elizabeth is 9 this year so she would be 11 for her first calf. Perfect age.

This scenario is the perfect way to eventually build up the Hi Way family again imo! Indali gets the oppertunity to watch what will hopefully be the birth of multiple calves before she begins breeding, which is setting her up for success. I imagine down the line, providing Indali has multiple daughters of her own, they would move Karishma and Elizabeth to a new facility and focus on the single matriline again.

Yes. This is what I am thinking. Hopefully Indali will have plenty of daughters!

I hope the new bull is a Radza son!

This idea of Indali whitnessing multiple births before getting pregnant herself will not work out. Karishma seems to be non-breeding since a few years. So all future calves in Chester will come from Beth and Indali. Beth is the same age as Indali and there is no reason why she should have a calf before Indali. Both Indali and Beth have been around newborns (Beth with Phaya and Indali with Anjan and Riva), I see no reason why both cant have babys ASAP. Making sure that these calves survive EEHV seems the biggest issue…. Hopefully these new vaccines work!

Yeah I think two matrilines is the right way for now, but if it comes down to it, I'm sure they'll choose to continue with the Hi Ways and perhaps in the mid to long term Karishma and Elizabeth and their bloodline will end up somewhere else. As was mentioned in the Chester thread there is not really room to keep Anjan if he can't be kept with both the females and any new bull that may arrive, so I think the mostly likely scenario is he probably won't be at the zoo much longer, especially as Maya had to be separated from Aung Bo (each had their own time with the Hi Ways) towards the end of his time at Chester.

As mentioned Karishma is pretty much non breeding for now, she seems to still be affected by a retained fetus from about four years ago. However if a bull is brought in in the next couple of years, it will be a perfect time for Elizabeth and Indali to conceive their first calves, though I wouldn't rule out Elizabeth potentially being pregnant already from Ming Jung at Whipsnade as it was mentioned in the Whipsnade news thread last year in July that she (along with Donna) had a breeding recommendation.

Anjan has been planned to move for ages now. I'd assume the recent unforeseen circumstances surrounding the deaths of both Sundara and Riva have contributed to Chester deciding to retain him much longer than they probably initially would have, for Indali's sake.

They may chose to transfer him out shortly before the two new cows arrive, or perhaps more likely, transfer him out once Indali's settled in with the two new girls. The bull paddock isn't the biggest, but Anjan also isn't a fully grown bull. I'm sure he'll be fine there in the meantime and will likely eventually be replaced by a breeding bull. Probably sooner rather than later!

On the note of both young cows breeding too; I'd be very surprised if Chester didn't allow them both to conceive straight way. Both cows would likely be around nine years old by the time a new bull is brought in. The perfect age for first conception and as has been stated, there's little reason to delay either cow from conceiving. It would hugely benefit the herd socially too.

I heared that female Ziha in La Palmyre Zoo died in january. Can anybody confirm this information?

EleWiki says so, but anyone can enter this information I guess. Ziha Would be a lost matriline
