Asian Elephants in Europe 2025

The zoo confirmed it yesterday. She had leg problems like her father had.
Be nice if you attached the link to source (which is the normal course of action). Like most individuals I and a good part of this forum hold little water for Wikipedia and its other sub groups. They are hardly the pinnacle of validated fact-finding nor a reliable news source.

I look forward to you providing and linking the source document (zoo confirming the passing of its younger elephant Ziha. Thank You very much ...

There isn't any link. After a regular visitor reported the sad news, I emailed the zoo for information and the zoo replyed and confirmed the death of Ziha.

Thank you for beeing me so unkind. Sorry for that I was sharing "not reliable" news. In the future won't share anything, and won't make people confusing.

59-year-old elephant Pinky died today at Burgers' Zoo. She had recently been eating and drinking less and less, lost weight and was suffering greatly from one of her front legs due to osteoarthritis. It was therefore decided to put her to sleep for welfare reasons.

Terrible start to the year for Arnhem, already back down to two elephants. At least Pinky and Dunja both lived longs lives and had severe health issues.

It is the natural order of things... with elderly elephants. Both females lived a long life and were specifically cared for at Burgers' Zoo for end of life care. Cow Pinky was probably the elephant who has resided the longest time at Burgers' itself. She was an icon of the old Hagenbeck rock work of the park. I have the utmost respect for her keepers and the head elephant keeper who so eloquently and touchingly commented both elephants histories and what end of life care means both for animal and staff.

Good news! This week, the University of Utrecht, in collaboration with Diergaarde Blijdorp, Eindhoven Zoo, DierenPark Amersfoort, Wildlands Emmen and Artis, started testing a vaccine to protect young elephants from EEHV. The first vaccinations took place at Diergaarde Blijdorp on Faya and Bangka. They are the first elephants in the EU to be vaccinated against herpes. The aim is to determine whether vaccination is an effective way to protect young elephants.

The vaccine that will now be tested was developed by researchers at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine. It consists of a copy of a protein complex located on the surface of the virus, which the virus uses to enter elephant body cells. The study will initially vaccinate six elephants over five years old to test the safety of the vaccine. If these elephants do not experience any significant side effects, younger elephants, who do not have sufficient antibodies, will then be vaccinated next.

Two elephants at Eindhoven Zoo were also vaccinated with the new EEHV vaccine this week. They are 26-year-old Ma Palai and 6-year-old Jing. Two more elephants will be vaccinated next week at DierenPark Amersfoort. They are likely to be 25-year-old Indra and 15-year-old Kina.
The six vaccinated adult elephants did not experience any side effects. Therefore, it was now the younger elephants' turn. Radjik and Maxi received the vaccine last Monday at Diergaarde Blijdorp. Mauk and Manoa were also vaccinated at Wildlands Emmen this week. Some other Dutch zoos will also vaccinate young elephants. Vaccination will then be started in other countries as well. These elephants will be monitored for a longer period to see whether they make enough antibodies against the virus and whether these antibodies eventually protect against the virus.

I am confident that the consortium of zoos pantsering with the Utrecht University's Faculty of Veterinary Medicine will see this test through and that finally we have an effective vaccine for our growing Asiatic and African elephant herds.

All the zoos mentioned have either calves or juvenile elephants that will benefit from a precautionary vaccine treatment protocol.

I also hope it will work. But remember that a vaccine doesn't necessarily result in long term protection. The blue tongue vaccine has empirical evidence of not showing long term protection or even protection in certain ungulate species. So remember this is a clinical trial. I'm confident the vaccine is safe however I'm not confident in it's potency or long term immunization potential. So temper your expectations.

No vaccine is 100% effective and with most viral diseases virulence and mutability are prime drivers. Mind you: Our current human influenza vaccines are always based around strains that have been developped ante 1-2 years prior (that is the inevitability of vaccine protection only over time and always by a margin in production to commercial use and the ever evolving new viri... cycle.

Shandra passed away at Tierpark Hagenbeck this morning. A heartbreaking loss but it was absolutely her time, she was in incredibly poor condition yesterday. Horrible to see.
Shandra was born in 1966 and arrived at Hagenbeck Sellingen in May 1974. She has reached a respectable age at 59+. She contributed greatly during her life to the European elephant population and had no geweer than 6 calves (her last one was F Shila in 2007 ...). May She R.I.P.

Shandra only had on calf, a stillborn male born in 1996, and Shila's mother is Lai Sinh

Sorry, You are right ... I checked against the Swedish elephant.se ONLY. Should I have used Petra Prager's site for reference, I could have known....

Mea maxima culpa.

The young bull "Yadanar" is on the move from Heidelberg to a zoo in the Netherlands. There are a few options here, as Amersfoort, Rotterdam and Eindhoven are all in need of new bulls (although AFAIK, Rotterdam is still set to receive Nuka from Hungary, however considering how long ago that news came out, I wouldn't be entirely surprised if that plan has changed). I've heard rumblings that Wildlands might be looking to move Timber along as well, so perhaps a multi facility, multi bull move? I think the only safe option to strike out would be Artis, considering Sibu arrived less than a year ago.

Timber will move from Wildlands to Eindhoven Zoo. The move was already planned in September last year, but was postponed because he came in musth. He recently came out of the musth, so rumours are that he will move soon.

A comment on Zoo Heidelberg's facebook post mentions that Wildlands employees were seen there today...

Why move Timber? They havent had a female pregnant yet! He had only one male calf at Emmen so far. so who will be coming to replace Timber? Oh, the Emmen soap continues...

It is tough to follow the recommendation to breed only ONE female when they could use all females to attempt to create a maternal line.

I know timber has some issues getting along with the younger bulls, so I would not be at all surprised if that was a reasonable part of why they were looking to move him along. And of course, he could have very easily bred any of the cows prior to his departure.
