Asian Lions in Europe - Part Two

A new male has arrived in Rotterdam. I do not know the origin though.

Ex Singapore Zoo. Offspring from a Hyderabad Zoo (India) -born pure-bred Asiatic lion pair.

Same genetic lineage as the Asiatic lion imported to Aalborg (the new EEP studbook keeper/admin.) late last year. Even so, a very welcome genetic addition to the EEP population.

I do hope more pure-breds will come from either India direct or zoos in Japan/Malaysia (they both have - if I am correct - pure-bred stock // but will check later on ...) sooner rather than later.

To put the EEP on a good sound genetic base another 10 founders are probably what is needed. It is not as if the Sakkarbaug Zoo in Junagadh / Gujarat State in India has no wild-born unrepresented pure-bred Asiatic lions on site (there are at least some 30 or so wild born ex Gir Asiatic lions unrepresented in any captive groups within that Zoo as we speak ...).

Male, Aslan (B15/2/2013) left Budapest in November for Parken, Sweden. He replaces the previous Parken male, Kaya (B1999 at Dudley) who has passed away

The two male cubs from Parken's last litter also appear to have gone elsewhere (destination not clear atm)

One of the male cubs ''Achir'' have passed away in june.

Achir had problems with his balance and Kaya (passed away in june too) had tumors and problem with his kidney and liver. He had also problem with his anal.

Male, Rajesh (Bchester1996 Chandani X Jake) was put to sleep at Koln yesterday (12 Jan)

He was the last surviving individual from Chester's 1996 litter of 3.0

They're can't be many animals left that were born to the original quartet (Arfer, Jake, Ruchi and Chandani) imported into London in 1990.

2.2 left from Chandani and Jake - Sarla at Parken, Gita at Santillana, Ashok at Chessington (all from the 1997 litter) and Asoka at Rome (1998 litter)

Ruchi X Arfur - No surviving cubs. Ruchi however has a daughter, Kiri (sired by Arfur's successor, Kamal) who is alive and well at Parc de Felins in France. She was born in 1999 and is the sister of ZSL's most recent breeding female, Abi (who has also passed away in recent times)

Aakash at Aalborg has succeeded :) two male cubs born 30th December in a first breeding for Denmark.. See Aalborg thread for further details

What happened with the "Indian lion project"? The website was very informative.

What happened with the "Indian lion project"? The website was very informative.

The website was eventually taken down for several reasons. However we still have this thread and now a Facebook page which keeps upto date with the European comings/goings/births and deaths. Will PM you the link

A little update regarding ongoings at Aalborg.

Two male cubs were born on 30th December 2014, however these were both euthanised in late April. This allowed Aalborg's two lionesses to be moved to Santo Inacio in late April in order that two new lionesses could arrive. I am still trying to establish the origin of these lionesses but I am presuming that they are imported from Asia.

Aalborg Zoo Lionesses

I am still trying to establish the origin of these lionesses but I am presuming that they are imported from Asia.

Now confirmed that these lionesses are 'Yenny' and 'Yanna', born at Helsinki in 2007 and formerly of Dvur Kralove.

Recent updates:

0.1 born at Dublin in June to Sita and Kumar

0.0.2 cubs born at Moscow in March to Naui and Kuvam. A first breeding in Russia

Male Parys and female, Kalindi moved from Zoo Praha to Maubeuge, France yesterday. They were previously at Magdeburg until 2014 (when the latter decided to no longer keep the species)

Ashok the male Asian lion at Chessington has died at the age of 18yrs.

Most interesting fact from this perhaps, is that London have applied for two fresh pairs.

I wonder if Land of Lions would be able to hold two pairs separately, or if one pair would be kept at Whipsnade. Perhaps this is why they made the decision to build their holding offshow, which I think was criticized quite heavily on here.

ZSL might not keep both pairs longterm. Its quite possible they would be imported into and quarantined at ZSL but then one or two might be exchanged/distributed elsewhere.
