Asian Lions in Europe - Part Two

Kamran the Asiatic Lion who was born at Bristol Zoo in November 2012,is ill and is being neglected and abused. Kamran moved to Iran about eighteen months ago. There is currently a Go Fund Me Page online if you wish to aid his rescue.

If possible please donate and assist Kamran to be saved and brought back to his home Country (England)

Concerns over Bristol lion that fell ill after being moved to Iran

Why was this animal moved to Iran ?

I know that the Asiatic lion once inhabited Iran and there could be a captive breeding program there but I'm just curious.

Must be him yes. Naui didn't like him at all. Surprised he had the chance to make the cubs with her. But after they were born, she liked him even less, so they lived seperately. Wonder if Naui and her kids have a new male living with them in Moscow now.

Perhaps this is just normal agonistic behaviour for this species ?

I've heard that in the Gir forest the lionesses form a pride composed of females and offspring whereas the males are largely solitary except for during the mating season.

At Rotterdam Zoo Asian lioness Bente was euthanisesd. She was born in Rotterdam in 2006 and was fifteen years old.

Bente suffered from neurological problems from an early age. The exact cause has never been found. The situation remained stable for a long time, but in the last few months the symptoms increased dramatically. She walked very uncoordinated, stumbled a lot and kept her head continuously in a cramped position.

For some time it has been known that neurological problems occur in many more Asiatic lions of various origins and in different zoos and wildlife sanctuaries. Because Aapel and Aapel's offspring also show neurological problems, an investigation into the cause and occurrence of these problems has been started, in cooperation with the European Studbook and Utrecht University.

I am making an update of my records about aian lions in Europe and I am missing some info. Doen anyone know about Aisha/Aiesha, born in Bristol and probably moved to Prague?

Aisha came to Prague in 2008. She was intended to breed here, was with two different male lions but never bred. In year 2014, she was retired and sent to some zoo in Izrael, but don´t remmember the name.

According to Zootierliste, The Tisch Family Biblical Zoo is the only zoo in Israel with Asian lions. They got a female from Prague in 2014, so she will probably be there.

Hi all. I hope you don't mind me coming on to ask a question (apologies for using this thread but it has recent activity so hopefully there's someone there). I've been trying to find out what happened to Devika who was born in Paignton in 2000. I 'met' her as a cub and fell in love. The last update I could get from Paignton was in 2002 and I've been wondering what happened to her ever since, they told me she'd been moved to Frankfurt Can I conclude she was one of the lions who died at Chessington? I see there have been a number of posts mentioning this but would like to know if this is the same female. Thank you.

Devika was sent to Chessington in 2003, where she gave birth to triplets the following year. When the cubs were around 15 months old, one died of a fit and the remaining two were euthanised after being found to suffer from the same condition. Devika died herself, shortly after.

I’m sorry to pass on disappointing news. Welcome to ZooChat nonetheless and please feel welcome to stay and learn more about Asian lions or your other favourite species.

Thank you ever so much for letting me know. It is sad news but I'm grateful to finally know what happened to her. She was absolutely beautiful (I'll try to add some photos to the gallery). I will continue to follow your discussion, I found reading these posts really interesting. I appreciate your time and response.

The oldest asian lionesses in Europe today were both born in 2002.
I photographed this pannel at la Boissière du Doré last month

So Kalindi (born 02/05/2002 Koln) is the second oldest, and the oldest is only a month older...but who is it ? Maybe Kolya at Plankendael ?

Does anyone have any recent pictures of churchilla. Sorry I know it's not news but I was just wondering since I can't tell her apart through the others and there are not many pictures of the individuals

What ultimately happened to Kamran the Lion who was born at Bristol and transferred to Iran? I know he was being abused and close to death. There was even a petition for him to be relocated again.

How is the European population going ? Has there been any births recently ?

It seems that the population is declining, am I wrong ? I hope some births will happen soon.

I agree breeding has been lacking lately. There’s fewer holders than for their African counterparts and breeding has been sporadic.

Another thing I’ve noticed is how many zoos keep them in 1.1 pairs, which isn’t how they live in the wild. Males live separately from the females (usually in small groups of 2-3) and associate for breeding.

Breeding has been highly successful outside the region in Singapore, with several cubs born until breeding was halted.

At the age of 16 Asiatic lion Churchilla ('Chica') has been put down. The zoo hasn't released a lot of info, but in their magazine they mention autopsy reveiled degraded vertebrae, as well as cysts in her reproductive tract, helping to explain her lack of cubs across her life. I also know from sources that she had skin issues. Of course it can't be ignored that she had been living in total isolation for 1,5 years now following the rift with Lalana (+cubs) and the death of Bente. See also Afscheid van leeuwin Chica: het ‘zwarte schaap’ van Blijdorp

For those keeping track: Species360 lists a total of 4 P. leo persica births over the last 12 months (1 Jerusalem, 1 London, 2 Planckendael), bar any very recent additions.

On a side note: is anyone up to snuff on what in the end came of the whole ''fresh blood'' coming from India/Singapore? I know Aapal and several other individuals were part of it, but also that many of them turned out to be suffering from all kinds of neurological disorders. For example, Aapals cubs are not considered fit for breeding. I guess what I'm saying is that the entire exchange kind of happened before I was paying attention and I'd love for someone to talk me through it, whahah.

Well in terms of Prague it's easy, Sakkarbaug used them pretty much as a place to dump the worst animals, they needed to get rid of...
