I know this isn’t Europe but thought it might be an interest.

Yokohama Zoological Gardens “Zoorasia” in Japan announced the arrival of… Vera & Barra from Singapore Zoo.

I am very sorry. Please forgive me for not talking about the Asiatic lion in Europe.

I would like to know the family tree of the Asiatic lions at the Singapore Zoo.Do you know? How many Asiatic lions are there now? Are they purebred? Are these traditions accepted in India?

I would also like to know about the pedigree of the Asiatic lions that lived at Zoo Negara in Malaysia in the 1990s. If you know, I would be happy if you could let me know.

The 5-year-old Asiatic lioness Reena at Diergaarde Blijdorp has died. She had been struggling with neurological symptoms from an early age, resulting in ataxia. The disease symptoms became increasingly worse in recent months. It was therefore decided to put her to sleep.

For years, the EEP, University of Utrecht and the University of Rome have been jointly conducting a large-scale study into the cause and prevention of ataxia in Asiatic lions. Lioness Reena was therefore transferred to the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Utrecht immediately after her death, where she will become part of an extensive study in the coming period.

On the Instagram of Korkessaari Zoo they mention that male Szimba and female Arja are put together and that they have three lionesses.

I am confused about two things in this post. First thing is I don't know which Arja yhey have. They had Arya but she was sent to Fota where she had three cubs this year. The only lioness with a name like that in my database is living in London. Does anybody know which Arja is in Helsinki?

Second confusing thing is that in my database the three lionesses living in Helsinki are Amira, Kalyana and Kyna. And no Arja.

@Tomoko Kitamura, about the Kuala Lumpur - Zoo Negara Asiatic lions. I have the following founders on record:

KUALA LUMPUR
They imported 2 females in February 1975: F Juna CB 2-3-1973 JUNAGADH) and F xxxx CB 4-6-1974). Followed in May 1983 by a male CB 12-5-1983 JUNAGADH). Female Juna was sent to Taiping, Malaysia on 2th July 1989. I figure they should have received another male in 1975 along with both females on breeding loan. Alas, the records I first found are incomplete. I should have an official original studbook for the All India Asiatic Lion program from long ago laying about.

I get to Singapore later.....!

@Tomoko Kitamura, You requested similar information relating to imports to Singapore Zoo.
Here are the data:

SINGAPORE ZOO
15-4-1994
M Rohan (CB 20-5-1992 JUNAGADH)
F Pamela (CB 20-3-1991 JUNAGADH)

24/25-3-2009
F Swati (CB 2-3-1999 JUNAGADH)
F Amba (CB 12-1-2005 GIR SAFARI)
M Khapat (WB 4-10-2004 GIR SANCTUARY)

I don't think - allthough have no proof - that the first pair Rohan * Pamela ever bred.
The 2009 imported Singapore breeding pair is/was - I believe - Khapat * Amba).

Thank you for all the information. I was very happy and moved.

Rajah, born at Zoorasia in Japan, passed away three months ago. He was 16 years old. Today, the animal house where he lived will be closed.

He was a long-awaited prince. He was famous for slowly and carefully descending the stairs backwards. He also loved eating leaves (glossy privet exclusive!). He was artificially raised, so he loved the zookeeper who raised him (he was called Papa), and three months after Papa retired, he passed away after chasing him. Rajah, with his adorable appearance and beautiful eyes, was an Asiatic lion who gave us warm smiles and courage. His death made me want to know more about Asiatic lions.

He was the son of Yohan from Zoo Negara and Uma (382) from India.

There are currently three Asiatic lions in Japan. All of them came from the Singapore Zoo.
They are an older brother, a younger brother, and a younger sister.

They are no longer able to breed in Japan.

I heard that in Singapore, Asiatic lions are kept in groups. I wanted to know how they maintain genetic diversity and breed in Singapore, and what kind of blood relationship Raja has with the lion that came to Japan from Singapore.

Of the two born on 12 May 1983, one that went to Malaysia is listed in the Indian studbook as having a destination of Private(120), which seems to be the case. The other was transferred to Van Vihar.

There is no record of any lions moving to Malaysia after that in the Indian files, but it probably took another generation before Johan was born on 30 June 1995. Were they from Europe, not India? Or were they inbred?

I send a mail to Korkessaari zoo and I got this answer:

"Sisters Arya and Amira moved from Fota WIldlife Park to Korkeasaari Zoo in 2019. Arya moved back to Fota in 2023 and has since had cubs of her own.

Amira is still living in Korkeasaari Zoo, she is nicknamed Arja due to initial mix up of the names upon arrival."

14-year-old lioness Lalana has died at Diergaarde Blijdorp. She suffered from the contagious disease Feline leukaemia virus (FeLV). Last Friday, she fell ill. She stopped eating, vomited and hardly moved. She was undergoing treatment but this did not work sufficiently. Given her age, it was decided to put her to sleep.

Whether male Wishu is also infected with this virus will be investigated in the coming weeks. If he turns out to be completely healthy, it is likely that new lionesses will soon move to Diergaarde Blijdorp.
