Asian Lions in Europe - Part Two

Cotswold Wildlife Park have received a male from a French collection, most probably the male born at Boissiere in May 2011.

His name now announced as Rana... no source collection confirmed, but don't think it could be anywhere else*

*unless he's been re-named!

There's a certain Facebook group who would be very annoyed if that happened!

Kumar and Naui from Rotterdam are both departing, Kumar is joining the new setup at Dublin, whilst Naui is on her way to Moscow.

The 2 hand-reared male cubs born at Bristol last year are now on show in the Lion exhibit , with access to all areas . No mention of where their mother now is .

Lioness, Shiva (Besancon2005 Lady X Dacca) has returned to her birthplace at Besancon from Bristol to replace her mother, Lady who died earlier in the year. She will once again be paired with Tejas (Chester2007 Asha X Asoka)

Interesting departure from Bristol. I imagine its quite likely that one of the male cubs at Bristol may be replaced by a female when they are older, to form a fresh pair there.

I imagine they want to make the most of Shiva whilst she is still relatively young, so their choice was either to wait until the latest batch of cubs left then bring in a new male, or send her away to a male sooner rather than later; with the aforementioned desire to make the most of her breeding ability, the latter is the most sensible course.

Still won't make a difference in the long run unless there is a hefty import of new blood ;)

Budapest cubs have been sexed as 2.2 and named.....

Kuvam (Zurich 2010, Joy X Radja) has moved to Moscow to form a new pair for them. He should be joined by Naui from Rotterdam in the near future...

Moscow's exsisting female, Jade (Chester 1994, Chandani X Jake) is now presumed to have died due to her advance age and this development

New date for the import of the unrelated Asians from Singapore already known?

Or will Praha Zoo beat the rest and import direct from India first?

Asian lions from Singapore will be imported during the summer recess period.
Females arrived in June 2012, male to arrive over summer (2013).

Now that's a fantastic bit of news.... :) Fingers crossed that this is the start of better times for the EEP Asian Lion population

1.1 to Zoo Santo Inacio, Portugal. Male from France, Female from the UK.

Thanks for that piece of news: The UK female should be either Heidi or Indi from London's 2011 litter (Abi X Lucifer)

The male is described as seven years old - The only male of that age within France is Jaipur at La Boissiere (Besancon 2005, Lady X Dacca) so I'd assume that he's that one that made the trip to Portugal. He has a daughter from their 2011 litter left at Boissiere so a good chance for them to hold onto her and increase to two (potential) breeding females

In other news: Naui from Rotterdam finally left for Moscow earlier this month to meet Kuvam from Zurich

...and finally Magdeburg welcomed a new litter of 0.3 on 29th April (Parys X Kalindi, the third litter for this pair) All doing well so far :)
