Denver Zoo Asian Tropics

Just heard that Knoxville is hoping to move its breeding bull and bring in two more females in order to open up the yards and establish a non breeding female herd.

Team Tapir

they house African elephants ;) So the African elephant bachelor herd at the Birmingham zoo would be a good place for him!

Since the video is all closeups, it is a bit difficult to piece together the overall size of the exhibit. But if my picture of it is correct, it seems a bit small. Also appears to be 100% cement flooring with no natural substrate. Very disappointing indeed.

This is the only exhibit that I was truly worried about. I know some fishing cats are kept in a lot worse but its still disappointing. I will get a free tour on April 14 with a group of other volunteers. I'm not allowed to take pictures but I will for sure post my thoughts about the new exhibit. Can't wait until July when everyone else gets to see it.

I agree. It would make a huge difference if at least some of the floor was wood chips or something. I do like how the wall was created to look like a riverbank though. By the way, is the entire fishing cat area indoors or is there some kind of outdoor access too?

There is no outdoor access for the fishing cats, or any animal inside the building.

Just took the tour of Asian Tropics today. It was much better than I thought it was going to look like. There is one very large elephant exhibit, much larger than there current one, and a couple smaller ones but still presentable. It looked like most pachyderm exhibits were yards without trees but had room plus pools. The immersive effect with the rhinos/tapirs and gibbons was one of the best immersive exhibits I've seen. Plants are still being put it but so far the grass and some scrubs are getting bigger. The exhibit is passed of an Asian village that has been ravaged by elephants. It makes it look like very rouged but nice. The fishing cat exhibit is small and so is the otters but there is a very nice flying fox exhibit that is open for the quest. So far it is looking very promising.

what are they going to do with the pachyderm house if most everything that was in there has been moved to asian tropics?

Maybe they will demolish it and make it into the asian forest that is in their masterplan on their website.

what is gonna be in the asian forest?

The master plan I've seen replaces the old pachyderm building with a continuation of the African Plains concept started with Predator Ridge. I believe a lodge/cafe overlooking a hippo pool was shown.

Toyota Elephant Crossing IS the Asian Tropical Forest with a new name.

I hope this post will answer all the questions.

There is talk about the old Pachy house, making it into a temporary home for its residents now ( African Hippopotamus 1.0 and Blake Rhinoceros 1.1) until the plans star with the African Expansion.

Just to let everyone know, the Master Plan is being re-planned. The original plans for Toyota was to have only 4-6 Elephants. Thing have changed immensely. Pretty much the old Pachy house will be renovated and give more room to the Hippopotamus and Rhinoceroses. Maybe once thats done the zoo can start breeding both of them again like they did multiple times in the past.
