Hey Everybody,
I know that the asiatic lion enclosure is very big And everytime i visit there always near there house or on the platform are they every down towards the bottom of the enclosure near the shop?

The Asiastic Lions at Chester use many parts of the enclosure. During my visits, I usually see them near their house, or on/around the platform, but I have also seen them at the longer point, near the Shop, or in the centre within the foliage.

It was many years ago now (Well, not that many), but I remember the old male, Jake (left the zoo in 2003, now deceased, and Iblis's grandad!), would occasionally walk down the side of the enclosure furthest from the house and roar. It was actually quite scary when I was only four :P

Re Jake:

In 2003, he had already been dead 3 years! Left Chester in 2000 and died later that year in his new home in France.

The lions do use the entire enclosure, however, the elevated platform is situated were there is the most sun, and where there is direct vision for the public to see them, so there is a happy balance between the lions and the public :)

Ah right. For some reason I had that date in my head - must have been Asoka or Naseek.

Ghost lions are the scariest of all.

Our best lion encounter was at the Lazy Summer Evening, it was about 9 o'clock and Iblis was at full stretch on the fence by the side of us and Asha came right up to us (so the distance of the barrier from the fence), looked us in the face and roared which is scary when you are a lot older than 4!

That fence doesn't look very strong when you are so close to the lions!

They were really active, chasing and playing together, it was very special to see them like that.

You possibly dont want to know that that fence does actually bend if the lions test it. Its designed to have a bit of give and take but is still strong enough to hold them in. Hint is don't be over the railings and annoying the lions lol

Breeding Programme

I went to the Zoo today and had a chat with a keeper,it seems that the Lions have been seen mating and they are hoping the female will get pregnant next time she comes in season, if she does'nt chase him off.which is great news.

Just incase anybody is interested I have attached two photos (not of my own) showing Asoka now at BioParco in Italy.
