Dudley Zoological Gardens Asiatic Lions

Was just wondering as the male Asiatic Lion at Dudley, Max, has just died at the age of 15 whether anyone knows what happened to any of the cubs he sired at Dudley?? I know one (Sam, hand reared and then lived with an Akita Dog for a few months) went to Kolmarden zoo in Sweden but died and was replaced by another male cub born at Dudley zoo in a later litter. Have always liked the lions at Dudley and other then Chester the pair at Dudley have probably made the most contribution to the Breeding programme for these rare lions.

It's a shame about Max's death, he did reach a good age for a male lion. Cub wise, Sam was born in 1998 and went to Parken zoo to breed with Chester Zoo's Sarla (unsuccessful as he died soon after) A pair were born in 1999 (Kai and Keera) with Kai going to replace Sam at Parken.

like you said 2 males went seperately to Parken Zoo a year apart (the first Sam) dying quite soon after arrival. The third litter (triplets) were born in in 2003, but the lioness killed one called Morbi after medical checks on the cub

I doubt a new mate will be found for the remaining lioness, considering her age.

* Keera (1999 female cub) moved to Nuremburg Zoo in 2002, and was to be paired with a male born at the Cotswolds

Max's relatives in Sweden

Yes, the cub Sam came to Parken Zoo (Eskilstuna, Sweden) in 1999 from Dudley together with the female Sarla, born 1997 at Chester. Sadly, Sam was put to sleep in May 2002 (actually the same day as the zoo opened for the season). If I remember it correctly, his back legs was paralyzed. At first he responded well to the treatment but it soon became worse. The autopsy showed that he had an abscess (hmm..right word.??) on the spinal column caused by an infection.

Kai (I know him as Kaya) came to make Sarla company in 2003. She gave birth to a single cub in august the same year but that one (a female) died at the age of 8 days. In december 2003 they got their second litter, a male called Ajay and a female called Asha. They survived their childhood but Ajay was put to sleep when he was one year and a few months old(spring 2005) due to congenital spinal problem. Kaya and Sarla hasn't got any more cubs since then.

The female Asha was sent to Ostrava (Czech Republic) in 2006. If anyone have some facts about her life there I would be happy to hear about that.

She was paired with 'Sohan' who was born in at Paington Zoo and moved to Ostrava in 2006. Both are around 5 years old, so are a good age for breeding.
