Asking for help in which zoos in the US to visit

Hi, I have recently gotten back into going to zoos. I live in Louisville, KY and would like to visit zoos near that have rare animals and unique exhibits. What zoos have rare or unique animals in the US and which ones have unique exhibits? Does anyone have any advice? Thanks for your help!

Your local Cincinnati Zoo has the only Sumatran rhinos outside of Asia and one of the world's best insect houses. Ohio is rich in other good zoos with Cleveland, Columbus, Toledo, the Wilds, and Akron. All of those zoos combined would have one of the best collections in the country and probably the world.

The Memphis Zoo is not far from you. They are among 4 US zoos to house Giant Panda. They have a very solid collection and outstanding nocturnal house.Northwest Passage,Teton Trek cat country and primate canyon are all good exhibits. They also have a nice reptile collection.

As far as unique animals go, one of the coolest I have seen is the Short-beaked Echidna. I've seen them at only 3 of the 77 zoos and aquariums I've visited: Los Angeles Zoo, Ellen Trout Zoo (Lufkin, TX), and Riverbanks Zoo & Garden (Columbia, SC).

If you are interested in sheer volume of species, the Saint Louis Zoo should be high on your list, and it's a manageable drive from Louisville.

Along with the Sumatran Rhinos, Cincinnati has several other species that are very rare in the U.S. and even a couple that can't be found elsewhere here like Grey's Crowned Guenon and Banded Palm Civet. I'd visit the Newport Aquarium also, if you can, which is closer to you than the zoo but only about a half hour bus ride from it and they have Macaroni Penguins (which I've only see there) and the largest captive population of the rare Shark Ray.
