Assam State Zoo Assam State Zoo news

On the 9th of September, they received a pair of leucistic black buck, a pair of blue and gold macaw, a female Indian rhino and a female Bengal tiger:Log in or sign up to view
It looks like this would be a zoo to zoo transfer. Allthough in the case of the female rhino and Bengal tiger it could be possible these were rescuees from the Assam Forest Department.

I put out word on the rhino and tiger already.

Well, I got back with some news on the recent large animal transport coming into the Assam State Zoo. The Bengal tiger, GOH rhino, blackbuck (leucistic) and blue-and-gold macaw all arrived from the National Zoological Park in New Delhi.

For the rhino ..., this move is and was monumental as the national zoo in Delhi has for years now been a talking shop for getting 1 of their 2 rhinos out to either Patna or Guwahati Zoos on breeding loan (and the cows were not getting any younger in the meantime).

I am glad it has now finally happened ..., my only remaining question would be which of the 2 ..., I am hard guessing Maheswari made the journey up to Guwahati with her daughter Anjuha staying at Delhi.

Assam State Zoo transferred a male GOH rhino, a male Bengal tiger and a pair of Indian pied hornbills to the Delhi Zoo in exchange.

Things of note are, a museum, new hippo enclosures (although it might just be the rendering, but despite being spacious, they look quite bare) with underwater viewing; some 'mega carnivore' enclosures which are huge and sloping (only Bengal tigers are shown), with presumably on-show dens; a "Snake and Reptile House", with gharials being shown, which also have underwater viewing; a nocturnal house and some deer paddocks that look similar to the carnivore enclosures. There is also a water bird walkthrough aviary planned, but from Therabu's review, it looks they already have one, so perhaps some modifications. There is also going to be a new hospital and rescue area, which I assume will be off-show.

Even though this has happened already in 2024 and largely escaped interest internationally, after more than a decade after the last birth a new Indian GOH rhino calf has been born. The breeding cow is female Pori (herself born at Assam State Zoo in 2002) and the sire is new male Gaonburha.

It was observed by zoo staff that the ASZ now holds 2 full breeding pairs of Indian GOH rhino at their breeding center. The staff are more confident now that lately positive cues have emerged from the breeding center and that first signs bode well for potentially more happy news in the near future (timeframe, I guess be 2026-27).

The female (!!!!!) has been name Lakkhi after a naming contest in January 2025.

Without giving further details, the news feature reports that the zoo expects 2 more rhino births in the next 2-3 years. While I am happy, I would like to know on what basis they have come to this assertion.

Well I hope the enclosures have improved since I went there in the 1990's...those for Indian rhino were little better than pig pens and the rhinos were mostly standing in mud as there was little else for them to access. Very poor accomdation for up to the nine(?) rhinos that I saw.

Dear @Pertinax, in the 2010's the breeding center was established with a complete off-site breeding area. Half the zoo has been overhauled since 1990 under a new Masterplan and ... TBH you are comparing present day 2025 with 30-35 years ago....

That's very good, I did say 'I hope the enclosures have improved'... and it very much sounds like they have. I presumed some of the GIR's that I saw there back then were relocated from Kaziranga or other reserves, if they had become 'problem' individuals, but that was only my guess.
