Assiniboine Park Zoo Assiniboine Park Zoo News 2014

Thanks! On day 5, at Hemker Snowleopard will get to meet a very special young pronghorn who moved there from Assiniboine Park.

I think a few pictures could be arranged. photography is not my career of choice so some of these may not be pretty.

I hope these show up OK.

Thanks for the photos! Journey to Churchill appears to be living up to the hype, and with a brand-new entrance Assiniboine Park Zoo is on the track towards having a record-breaking year in terms of attendance.

Thank you so much for sharing these pictures. The exhibit looks amazing!!!

What species of animal are in the exhibit? I know polar bears, seals (what species?), arctic foxes, snowy owls and musk oxen. Also based on the pictures there are wolves, but I don't remember reading about them in any of the articles about the exhibit. Are they regular grey wolves or arctic?

They are 2 rehabbed, blind harbour seals that can't be re-released, and the wolves are 5 timber wolves. I didn't get pictures of either sorry :/

When I saw the pictures and videos in the news articles, I thought they looked like harbour seals, but the zoo's website still says ringed seals. I'm going to trust your information though, because it's possible that the website hasn't been updated.

Also, are caribou in the exhibit complex? The zoo's website says they are, but it also doesn't mention the wolves at all. I haven't seen caribou in any pictures so I was wondering if they got cut from the plans and got replaced by wolves.

You don't have to apologize for not getting pictures of those animals. The ones you got are great!

I am glad to see these photos. I saw a photo on of just the rock beach area and all I thought was, "Oh no, where's the grass?"

They are harbour seals, there were no ringed seals available and these guys needed a place to live so win/win :)

The caribou field is done, I must've missed posting a picture of it, sorry! The wolves are on one of the three ranges intended for bears. With only having 4 bears, occupying all 3 exhibits would've been tough to manage. The wolves fill in nicely instead :)

Wow thank you ever so much KrissyR for posting all of those photos. The whole Journey to Churchill looks amazing. Boy I hope the zoo wins some kind of exhibit design awards because it puts Toronto Zoo's Tundra Trek to shame and it won some kind of award when it opened. Well worth the money the attention to detail they have put into everything.

Just a shame you didnt get to see more animals but they are still adjusting to their new environment so thats totally understandable.

I'm glad that the seals that needed a place to live got such an amazing new home!

Don't worry about not getting photos of the caribou exhibit. I just wanted to know if it was built. It was also a great idea to put wolves in the empty polar bear exhibit!

If you want a good laugh go to the zoos facebook page and take a look at a photo they have of polar bear Storm... he is doing his best impression of a black bear. I have never see a polar bear so dirty. Green yes. Grey yes, soft brown yes, totally black no
