Assiniboine Park Zoo Assiniboine Park Zoo News 2024

The zoo announced on their socials that there is now a blue billed curassow named Chad residing in toucan ridge. Looks like we have a new SSP species! I hope they can bring a female in soon. Seems @antilio capra had the keen eye to notice before it was officially announced.

They also mentioned he is *one* of the newest bachelors in toucan ridge, so methinks there may be many new faces to see. Hoping to get a visit in mid to late July and I will report back as always :D

As posted in the Calgary thread, Baffin the polar bear has passed away. Baffin arrived to Assiniboine zoo in December 2017 with Willow as orphan cubs from the Churchill area. He and Siku were sent over to Calgary this past October. Sad to hear of his passing, we miss him here!

By any chance @BovidBabe do you know what happened to the Prevost's squirrel? I looked on Zootierliste and it lists the zoo's website as the main source, however, when looking at the Discovery Centre the squirrel listing was removed (it was still there in March 2024).

I haven't seen the prevost's squirrel in quite some time. It used to be held across from the meerkats, but that changed when Sangria the porcupine arrived. Sangria would switch between that enclosure and the one with the tortoises. It was a flip of the coin whether or not the squirrel was in there or not each visit. Last time I went in July Sangria was in the Squirrel's enclosure.

I will be at the zoo in two weeks, I will see if I can get a hold of any information.

Oh how I missed Assiniboine Zoo! Went for a quick visit as the zoo was closed at one before brew at the zoo. Only a few interesting things to note:

- Teeka's former habitat is currently housing one of the snow leopardss. Bizhew the lynx's exhibit is under construction. Bizhew was no where to be seen, so I am hoping he is just BTS.
- Sangria is still in the prevost's squirrel's former habitat. I think the squirrel is gone for good. Didn't bump into keepers today, so couldn't confirm.
- Jemima the woyolie has the whole habitat across from Sangria's to herself.

What species is Sangria?

The zoo has welcomed Kelly the red panda from Zoo de Granby to breed with Tanvi. Interestingly enough, they now live in the former snow leopard enclosure by the entrance to the heavy horse centre. Once they are done the introductions phase, Mei Mei and Suva will move into the adjacent habitat.

Interesting. I know they had moved one of the snow leopards to Teeka the cougars former habitat. Has there been any transfers for snow leopards recently?

News from social media and my membership emails -
  • Julia the great horned owl has been transferred from the Canadian Raptor Conservancy in Vittoria Ontario. She now resides in one of the outdoor habitats attached to Toucan Ridge.
  • Two red-crowned cranes have been transferred from The Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute out of Virginia. No names released.
  • Agee's habitat has received renovations to include a wooden staircase to help her descend into the habitat. She is still not viewable to the public.

Do remember to put in the species when you use the name of an animal, since not everyone reading the thread may know much about popular individuals in the collection:). Edit: Not you specifically just a reminder in general

New species at the zoo! Guanacos. Named Cobs and Peaches, they reside in the open range section of the zoo. Also a few of this years conservation highlights (further information and reading here and here)
  • 210 Poweshiek skipperling butterflies released
  • 5 Poweshiek skipperling butterflies bred at the zoo
  • 51 Dakota skipper butterflies released into the wild
  • 276 Poweshiek skipperling butterflies in the freezer for diapause

Assiniboine Park has filed a lawsuit against various contractors that due to "shoddy construction", a pipe to burst in The Leaf resulting in a flood shortly after opening. This is not the first lawsuit regarding the Leaf. They also have had a lawsuit put against them for not compensating one of the companies enough. (Further reading here)

In much better news, the zoo is set to see a brand new animal health care centre. Taking a page from Toronto, it will have a viewing window. It is just in planning phases right now, hoping to open in 2029. Hopefully they get better contractors than the ones hired for The Leaf... (Further reading here)
