Auckland Zoo auckland also welcomes a new giraffe

I caught the tail end of a zoo documentary on TV last night about a young female giraffe's move from TWPZ to Auckland Zoo, stormy seas and all. Can anyone put a time stamp on when this move occurred? I have no idea when the doco was filmed. Also, how is the giraffe doing at Auckland now?

Do you know what the documentary was called, or what channel and time it was on?

It was called 'Wildlife at the Zoo', and it was on ABC1 yesterday at 6pm. ;)

Yup, it was Kiraka. Great to hear that the doco was not too ancient, and that she is doing well at the zoo.

Cheers!

Yes she is doing very well has mixed with her new family brileintly. Actuly Kiraka and our other 2 females have just got a new giraffe house aswell to stop our male Zabulu trying to mate his daughter lol he loves his girls its s looking great

Hi guys,

The company I work for actually built the new giraffe house. The old house has been removed in the last week or two.

There are still 4 giraffes there, and they are hoping Karaka and Zabulu will mate this time, but as of yet I don't think there are any plans to ship Nakuru or Rukiya away. Auckland Zoo holds the breeding herd of giraffes and I believe Hamilton Zoo has the bachelor herd which they swap males with.

As far as I'm aware there is no display area for the public to see the giraffes. The house is located right next to Kidzone, but there are no windows or access to the house. The only possible access for public to the house is blocked off as the rubbish bins are located there. There would be no way for public to see through to Pridelands from that area, it is completely blocked off.

I am a section volunteer on Saturdays at Kidzone with the three Keepers there and they are currently in the process of talking with the public as Kidzone is getting a revamp! New animals, new houses and a new layout!
