Auckland Zoo Auckland Zoo News 2015

Auckland Zoo posts actual news in the news section of their website? Sounds like a Tui Billboard.

Seriously though, I'm pleased to hear everyone's efforts have paid off and Burma is finally getting her long awaited companion after nearly 6 years.

To the same pair as last year I assume? I'm not aware of any recent imports.

Any news on the gender? Hopefully a girl after two litters of boys in recent years.
yes, to Jeta and Juno. I don't think they have been sexed yet.

From a photo on Auckland's Facebook page - it appears the Capybara have arrived from Adelaide :)

Yaaaaaaay!! I am so excited when new species come into the country!! :D

Photos on the Facebook here: https://www.facebook.com/AKLZOONZ/posts/10152834159756984

The two capybara's names are Rosita and Consuela. Judging by the number of posts on the photos they are going to be very popular!!

Need to go lie down now.

It will always remain funny to see zoo enthusiasts being very happy with capybara appearing in a zoo nearby :P
you should have seen how excited I was about squirrel monkeys!! :D

Just for interest's sake, these capybaras are the first new species ("new" as in not currently in the country) to be brought in by a zoo which isn't Wellington since Hamilton imported a pair of fishing cats back in 2009.

It is very exciting, and I hope that they flourish in New Zealand! And that Auckland has the forward-thinking to import an unrelated male for these two females.

that is certainly my hope!!

On the Facebook photo it says the capybaras are going to be housed in with the squirrel monkeys when they (the capybaras) go on show.

Yes, RoseZondag said that was the plan. They are replacing the otters I guess. So views will be very much "from above", but they should be fairly showy. Will be interesting to see if they renovate that exhibit at all for the new species.

A female giraffe calf has been born at Auckland Zoo last night - the 32nd ever at the Zoo. Photos on Facebook.

Auckland Zoo is celebrating the arrival of its 32nd giraffe calf - a 1.8 (6 foot) female to 13-year-old giraffe mum Rukiya.

The sixth offspring for Rukiya and 17-year-old dad Zabulu was born just after 10pm last night (23 April).

"Rukiya took about an hour and half to deliver this little one, which is on a par with most giraffe deliveries. She's such a fantastic mum, we really couldn't ask for better. Her calf was walking within half an hour, and has been suckling well," says Auckland Zoo's Pridelands team leader, Nat Sullivan, who witnessed the birth.

"It was so great to see the birth. Even though I’ve seen many here over the years, to me it’s still one of the coolest things you can ever experience,” says Nat.

A health check by vets at midday confirmed this newborn is in great health.

Rukiya and her calf will be gradually integrated with the rest of the giraffe herd, zebra and ostrich in the giraffe paddock in Pridelands within the next month.

the capybaras are now on show (as of yesterday). The zoo has put a video of them swimming on their Facebook but I can't get it to play.

That was a short quarantine period then! But very nice to have them in the Rainforest now, great addition!

The Capybaras are now on display! Auckland Zoo posted a video to their facebook page of the girls diving around in the water. They already look very settled.

And another bit of news, Rukiya the giraffe has had her new baby, a healthy baby girl! (also on FaceBook)
