Auckland Zoo Auckland Zoo news

oh no, she got a little tap from a cheetah. Slow news day in the media room perhaps?

as per Jalur_Tiger_Cub's post above: Zoo's new baby giraffe has a name | Stuff.co.nz
1 February 2012

The latest leggy addition to the Auckland Zoo has finally been named by her keepers.

The giraffe calf, born on January 16, has been named Nakuru - the place in Kenya where Rothschild giraffes are found.
Rothschild giraffes are one of the most endangered giraffe subspecies.

Nakuru is the fourth offspring from the zoo's resident giraffes Rukiya and Zabulu - who is a Rothschild giraffe - and the 30th calf to be born at the zoo.

The calf, which stands around 1.8m tall, is still being kept in her own enclosure and is let out for around an hour a day.

She is expected to be allowed back in the paddock with the other giraffes, zebra and ostriches later this month.

Both mum and baby have been checked out by the vet and are in good health.

Does anyone know where the Bolivian Squirrel Monkey enclosure will be? I thought it might be the empty enclosure in The Tropics?

Does anyone know Lazarus, Ngala, and Sheekas full birth dates? Im trying to put the last few dates in my lion record. Thanks :)

According to a keeper at the Aussie Walkabout encounter, Auckland Zoo will eventually have no kangaroo species and only one species of wallaby.

pretty much like all the other zoos. It would be so EASY to keep kangaroos and wallabies going in NZ zoos, but no, phase them out (and then try to import more when they change their minds again!)

Aucklnad is down to one male Red Kangaroo though, so will need to import to keep them going, or is Orana still breeding them?

I think it would be silly to lose the smaller wallabies, they do show the diversity well, and illustrate an interesting conservation story.

Sheeka - 12/02/99
Ngala: June 2002
Lazarus: June 2002 (no more accurate I'm afraid)

zooboy28 - small correction the red kangaroo is a female. Also what would be the point of breeding if the genetics are a bit 'dodgy'?

Thanks for that TarantulaMad. I have an almost complete list of all the lions that have lived at auckland zoo at some point and for the most part their offspring. This includes their name, sex, DOB,date of time at AKL, a few comments and their current location. Anyone have any idea how I could get this up on here for everyone seeing as it is in a chart sort of format.

Also the female kangaroos name is Allira :)

Oh, I don't know why I thought it was a male.

Why are you saying the genetics are dodgy? Are Orana's inbred or related to Auckland's (or both)? It wouldn't really matter if the genetics were dodgy - a little inbreeding wouldn't affect the animals, the population will have no conservation significance, and occasional suplementation of new animals should be relatively easy (compared with non-Australian exotic species).

You could export it from a table in Word to a PDF/XPS document, print screen it and upload it in the gallery.

Sounds like a good plan but I have no idea how to go about doing that. :)
Also it is 3 full pages and I cant quite find a way to view it without the writing being too small to read

I could do it for you if you want. If so, I'll PM you my email address so you can email the document to me.
