Is kakapo an error?

Auckland Zoo routinely take in Kakapo on a short term basis to provide treatment for conditions such as aspergillosis. At the time of publication, the zoo had Kakapo but I don’t believe there’s any remaining at this current time.

In any case, they’re not held at the zoo permanently or exhibited to the public, so without contacting the zoo it’s not possible to update their holdings on a regular basis.

I thought there Kakapo were kept in the Rainforest aviary? Is that still the case?

Is there any way of seeing them?

I thought there Kakapo were kept in the Rainforest aviary? Is that still the case?

I’ve never seen Kakapo on my visits. According to articles on the zoo website, they never leave the vet hospital (NZCCM) - even those who are treated at the zoo for several weeks. Following successful treatment, they’re observed at the vet hospital for a few more days and then returned.

The NZCCM does have viewing windows, so if you’re there at the right time, you may see one receiving treatment. They have a signage board of what species they’re treating that day, so if anyone was interested, they could come back at that time.

Update:

The zoo no longer have:

Mammals:

Capybara Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris

Reptiles:

Kapitia skink Oligosoma salmo

The zoo’s remaining Kapitia skinks have been released into the wild; while the Capybara are a phase out from last year.
