Australasian African Lion Population

Mansfield Zoo Update

As reported by @MattyP in the Mansfield Zoo thread, Dalila has died. This reduces Mansfield’s holdings to 3.0 lions (one elderly male tawny lion; and two ageing male white lions):

1.0 Rubani (24/05/2001) Fred x Sheba

1.0 Djuma (05/02/2007) Tim x Snow
1.0 Matimba (05/02/2007) Tim x Snow

On a side note, it’s fantastic to see Rubani reach a record breaking 22 years (heading for 23 years in May). This is exceptional for a male lion, with only lionesses previously attaining this age in the region.

Not sure where the "record breaking" comes from. Rubani's [Robbie] dad Fred [Freddie] was nearly 25 when he died.

Wow, that’s quite an age. Do you have a DOB and date of death for Fred out of interest? Rubani clearly has some long lived genes. :)

On a slightly unrelated topic, I was also curious if the Sri Lankan leopard cubs will be named or if you’ll leave that to the facility that receives them after they leave the zoo.

I would have to dig through the archives to get his exact birth and death dates. I know that he was born in 1983 and died in 2008.

As per the TV news item, the cubs will be named by the receiving institution when the time comes. Banduka will be moving to his new home soon and his new owner is happy to keep his name.

African Lion Population Wrap Up (2023)

2023:

The passing of Kuchani and Asali at Hunter Valley Wildlife Park was announced on ZooChat in January, with half-siblings (Phoenix and Maji) transferring from Mogo Wildlife Park to replace them.

Kamo Wildlife Sanctuary went into liquidation in March. They currently have 13 elderly lions.

Billabong Zoo’s breeding male (Milo) died in May. Milo was a founder and a genetically valuable member of the regional population.

2.1 cubs were born at Werribee on 04/06/2023 to Sheru and Nilo. The cubs have been named Jango, Mwezi and Kianga. Keepers are also hopeful Asali is pregnant and will welcome her first litter in early 2024.

Makena gave birth to a single cub at Monarto Safari Park on 12/08/2023. Sadly, the cub died as a neonate. This was followed by a litter of 1.4 cubs born to Husani on 30/08/2023. The cubs will be named in January, with a naming competition currently in progress. Following these births, Chad and Ruka have been removed from Monarto’s main pride and may transfer out in the future.

2.1 cubs were born 04/10/2023 to Lwazi and Marion at Taronga Western Plains Zoo. The cubs have been named Bahati, Jabari and Zawadi and are now on display, following a successful integration with their father and sisters.

Evelyn transferred from Taronga Western Plains Zoo to Mogo Wildlife Park, where she was paired with Baako. This resulted in a litter of cubs born in December, with no further details released on the litter at this stage.

Seb and Sacha transferred from Paradise Valley Springs to Poukai Zoo to form a second pride alongside Benji, Aleekah and Ayla. Both prides are non-breeding.

Dalila at Mansfield died this year. Other deaths reported in 2023 included Hanna at Paradise Valley Springs (died 2022); Numbi at Mogo Wildlife Park; and Vati at Tasmania Zoo (died July 2023).

2024:

It’s much hoped Mlinzi and Nairibi at the National Zoo and Aquarium will welcome a litter of cubs in 2024. Nairibi is getting on in years, but is still cycling and will hopefully conceive soon.

The expansion of the dens at Monarto will allow them to better manage Australia’s largest lion pride. I’m hopeful Makena will be given the opportunity to breed again given her genetic value.

Chad and Ruka are strong candidates for transferring out and with a number of the smaller zoos and wildlife parks holding ageing lions, it wouldn’t surprise me to see them transfer to one of them as non-breeding lions.

The quintuplets at Taronga are similarly strong candidates for transferring out. Taronga has been managing their pride in a series of combinations and while they have the space to do so, it suggests the males (and possibly one of the females) will be leaving in the future so a more permanent living arrangement can be established.

I will post an updated population list for African lion in 2024.

Birth Announcement - Mogo Wildlife Park

Lion cubs have been born at Mogo Wildlife Park. The parents appear to be Baako and Evelyn, as the news announcement refers to the birth turning their pair into a pride.

If so, this will be the first birth to Evelyn, who is a founder to the region; with Baako being the son of two founders himself.

What a fantastic year for lion births this has been!

2.1 born at Werribee; 2.1 born at Dubbo; 1.3 (surviving) born at Monarto.

Update on Mogo’s litter:

An update that the parents of these cubs are indeed Baako and Evelyn as we suspected and that the litter consists of two cubs.

The cubs and their mother are now on display.

Reported on socials.

Great to see Evelyn finally getting the opportunity to have a litter of own!

It's intriguing to see a continuation of two cub litters with our big cats as of late (quite rare either way!).

Sadly Marjan at the National Zoo and Aquarium passed away a few months ago. He’s survived by his brother, Sabi, who will turn 22 years old in June and is the fourth oldest lion in Australasia:

1.0 Sabi (04/06/2002) Kimba x Millie
Thanks for the news, I am surprised as I could not find any news by the zoo itself or on zoochat about Marjan's passing.

May King Marjan Rest in Peace.

Marjan was a magnificent lion, the dominant male of the pair. He and his brothers were the first and to date, only litter of lions born at the National Zoo and Aquarium.

I really hope this is their year with regards to breeding Mlinzi and Nairibi. She turns 12 next month and time isn’t on her side. Jacquelin (1974) gave birth at 12 years of age at Melbourne Zoo in 1986; and Ryo (1995) gave birth at Paradise Valley Springs in 2007, but both lionesses had produced litters two years prior to those births. Nairibi hasn’t bred in eight years.

A shame to see another Bahati, but I do really like the other three names of the females which are quite unique to the region.

With the breeding girls now ageing, it'll be interesting to see what the plan is for Monarto's pride going forward.

Keeping the five males as a bachelor pride and then acquiring some males from elsewhere to head their large female pride would be the best case scenario! Obviously this would still be at least a year away - once the cubs are old enough.

Looking back on my 2023 post, I see Lela and Mshindi were my picks for the female cubs. I especially liked Lela, which means ‘dark lady’ and references the dark honey coloured coats seen in Husani’s line. Looking at the video, one of the cubs is particularly dark coloured, so that must be her.

It’d be great to see a multigenerational pride and with the cubs maturing around 18-24 months, they might have a brief window to bring in new males while the older lionesses are still cycling. It’s a shame as not breeding from Makena now runs the risk of forgoing cubs from her; but to do so would run the risk of the older lionesses being unable to be integrated (as we saw last time) due to the additional time delay.

It's a shame that both Marjan and Sabi was never able to breed with a lioness seeing how if they have paired up with another lioness that is from a different blood it would introduce a new bloodline of the next generation of lions.

Their mother, Millie, came from Paradise Valley Springs, which have inbred their lions for several generations. Millie herself was born as a result of an aunt/nephew mating and they’ve continued to inbreed ever since.

The line became well represented regionally as a male from this line (Toby) went to Orana where he sired several cubs; and a lioness (Scarlett) went to Zion, where she produced several cubs. Though these branches are dying out (with all descendants non-breeding), it was a flourishing line in the 2000’s and 2010’s.

The Paradise Valley pride bred as recently as 2022 and will likely continue to do. They’re non ZAA members, so I’d be surprised to see accredited zoos accepting stock from them in this day and age.

As long as they don't have white lion genes, I can't see why ZAA wouldn't accept stock. It's a rather silly rule that they don't accept white lions. When you can successfully breed whites with out inbreeding needed for white tigers.

I’m not sure if there’s a specific rule prohibiting accredited zoos from accepting stock from wildlife parks like Kamo and Paradise Valley Springs; but the fact remains, their addition to the breeding programme is not needed. There’s no shortage of lions amongst accredited zoos and we can easily import new founders from South Africa (and other countries) as and when required.

Paradise Valley Springs cubs have previously ended up at Auckland Zoo, Wellington Zoo, Orana Wildlife Park and the National Zoo and Aquarium; but this was between 1996 and 2000, with those lions now deceased and their handful of descendants now post-reproductive.

Mlinzi (2013) was originally paired with Marion (2014) over a period of seven months, but they proved incompatible. This resulted in the transfer of Mlinzi to the National Zoo and Aquarium and the arrival of Lwazi (2017) from Taronga Zoo.

With Maya at Taronga showing a strong preference for Ato, the opportunity to transfer out Lwazi worked out well for both parties. Mlinzi and Nairibi (2012) have similarly proved a cohesive pair in Canberra.

Shoalhaven Zoo:

Kibwana (2014) has crossed eyes. As a result, none of his litter were ever considered for breeding.

I’ll note the last white lions in the region were bred in 2015, so it appears unlikely they would have bred anyway.

Shoalhaven hope to breed tawny lions this year. The plan is to import a lioness from South Africa; but if unable to raise the funds, the back up plan is to receive a lioness from within Australia. To facilitate breeding, Ariel will transfer out. Ariel only has one testicle, so Juda has been identified as the breeding male.

It’ll be great to see these genetically valuable founders finally contribute to the breeding programme; even more so if an additional founder female can be sourced. A match will a female from Billabong appears the ideal solution.
