Australasian African Wild Dog Population

Australasia currently has 11 holders of African wild dogs, which includes two in New Zealand and nine in Australia. Most holders maintain non breeding packs, with the exception to this being Monarto Safari Park, Perth Zoo and Altina Wildlife Park.

This is almost a complete list, bar some Altina related gaps.

Altina Wildlife Park - Litters

As noted above, there’s a handful of gaps related to Altina Wildlife Park. @Bec.Surian is invited to contribute to any clarifications/confirmations of Altina’s holdings; but if she doesn’t wish to, that’s also fine.

This is the information I’ve been able to find out:

Six litters of African wild dogs have been born at Altina:

6 pups born 27/05/2013 to Unknown and Unknown
12 pups born 15/05/2016 to Travis and Zahra
6 pups born 13/05/2017 to Travis and Zahra
4 pups born 00/05/2018 to Travis and Zahra
7 pups born 00/05/2018 to Unknown and Unknown
4 pups born 10/01/2023 to Adrian and Rita

Additional notes on these litters:

6 pups born 27/05/2013 to Unknown and Unknown:

3.0 went to Perth (Bwana, Hasani and Kondo). Bwana is now at Tasmania Zoo, Hasani is now at the National Zoo, Kondo is deceased.

0.3 remained at Altina. I assume one of these was Zahra. All now deceased.

12 pups born 15/05/2016 to Travis and Zahra:
6 pups born 13/05/2017 to Travis and Zahra:

0.6 born 15/05/2016 went to Sydney Zoo (see population list).

0.1 born 13/05/2017 went to Sydney Zoo (see population list).

Of the remaining 11 pups:

8 were males and went to Wildlife HQ (7 still alive).
3 are unaccounted for (see next litter’s comments).

4 pups born 00/05/2018 to Travis and Zahra:
7 pups born 00/05/2018 to Unknown and Unknown:

The litter of four (all males) was born to “experienced parents”, which must have been Travis and Zahra.

Since Altina has a bachelor pack of 6.0, it’s reasonable to assume these are males from the 2017 and 2018 litters of Travis and Zahra (the 3 unaccounted dogs from 2017 plus the 4.0 from 2018 = 7 dogs, so assume one deceased - probably from 2017 litter).

Therefore the second litter of 4.3 pups born May 2018 must comprise of females Rita and Pari (at Altina); and a further 4.1 that are no longer in the region (deceased or exported).

4 pups born 10/01/2023 to Adrian and Rita:

4.0 pups still at Altina (see population list).

Are there plans to breed Romeo since he’s an import or is he wasting away? Also, is it good for the dogs to be held alone?

Two good questions!

There are no plans to breed from Romeo and I was additionally told that Hamilton Zoo are phasing them out (to be replaced with Spotted hyena).

No, it’s not ideal for African wild dogs to be on there own, though Romeo certainly looked full of life on my last visit earlier this month. Introductions are usually carried out with near even numbers in each pack e.g. one to one, one to two, two to three etc. With this in mind, if Orana’s pack dwindles to two females, it might be worth considering him joining them.

So is that where you predict Romeo to end up?

I’ve been told introducing a single African wild dog to more than two is inadvisable, so if Romeo can outlive two of Orana’s females, then yes.

If not, Romeo will die at Hamilton Zoo. Orana’s females are 3-4 years younger than him, so it’s really a numbers game. The average lifespan is 8-12 years, though many die before that. I note Orana has lost three females that were the littermates of their existing pack. They originally imported seven dogs, plus their older aunt (also deceased).

Altina Wildlife Park - Information

First of all, a huge thanks to the staff at Altina Wildlife Park who’ve gone above and beyond to help me fill in the gaps missing in this population list.

Additional information/corrections to my research:

The parents of Bwana and Hasani were Travis and Zahra.

The DOB of the males at Wildlife HQ are 15/05/2016 (Aeren, Chuka and Duma) and 13/05/2017 (Lezaro, Mutaz, Niryu and Otto). Their parents are indeed Travis and Zahra.

Rita and Pari were born May 2018 to Juma and Akida.

Altina’s bachelor pack consists of six males from two litters. Chuks and Dion were born May 2018 to Travis and Zahra; and Luki, Mambo, Neo and Obi were born May 2018 to Juma and Akida.

Altina Wildlife Park (History)

First African wild dogs:

Altina Wildlife Park’s first African wild dogs were a bachelor pack of six males from Perth Zoo. Their names were Juma, Amiti, Kitunzi, Jaali, Kijani and Taji. All are now deceased.

First breeding pair (Travis and Zahra):

Altina’s first breeding pair were Travis and Zahra. Travis was born at Monarto Safari Park and Zahra was born at Taronga Western Plains Zoo.

Travis and Zahra produced their first litter in May 2013 (six pups). Three males (Bwana, Hasani and Kondo) were transferred to Perth Zoo; three females (Akida, Amri and Etana) remained at Altina and are now deceased.

Travis and Zahra produced their second litter in May 2016 (twelve pups). Four males (Aeren, Chuka and Duma) were sent to Wildlife HQ; six females were sent to Sydney Zoo (Hasina, Jaffa, Fanta, Gadina, Imani and Emi); two pups died.

Travis and Zahra produced their third litter in May 2017 (six pups). Four males (Lezaro, Mutaz, Niryu and Otto) were sent to Wildlife HQ; one female (Kamili) was sent to Sydney Zoo; one pup died.

Travis and Zahra produced their fourth litter in May 2018 (four pups). Two males (Chuks and Dion) remain at Altina; two pups died.

After the death of Travis, Zahra was sent to Sydney Zoo with seven of her daughters.

Second breeding pair (Juma and Akida):

Akida (female from Travis and Hasani’s first litter) was paired with Juma (surviving male from Altina’s original bachelor pack of six dogs).

Juma and Akida produced their first and only litter in May 2018 (seven pups). Four males (Luki, Mambo, Neo and Obi) remain at Altina; two females (Rita and Pari) remain at Altina; one pup died. The males are in a bachelor pack with the two youngest males born to Travis and Zahra; while the females are each in breeding packs.

Juma and Akida are now deceased.

Third breeding pair (Adrian and Rita):

Altina received four male African wild dogs from Sydney Zoo (Adrian, Badu, Severus and Seimon). They were introduced to the daughters of Juma and Akida (Rita and Pari). Adrian and Rita emerged as the alpha pair; while Seimon and Pari formed a pair and were were removed from the pack.

Adrian and Rita produced their first litter in January 2023 (four pups). The males (Kasigo, Jumaane, Shujaa and T’Challa) remain at Altina Wildlife Park.

A huge thanks again to Altina for helping me fill in the blanks in my population list and subsequently compile a history of their African wild dogs.

As somebody who follows the lineages of animals in the region, it was fascinating to see the continuation of this family line:

First breeding pair: Travis (founder) and Zahra (founder)

Second breeding pair: Juma (founder) and Akida (first generation)

Third breeding pair: Adrian (founder) and Rita (second generation)

Very interesting to read! It’s rare for us to get a complete history like this; thank you for sharing.:)

Hamilton Zoo (History)

Successful breeding pack (2003-2008):

Following the initial import of three African wild dogs from South Africa in 2003, Hamilton Zoo had one of the most successful breeding packs in the region, welcoming four litters:

Hamilton Zoo imported 2.1 African wild dogs from Cango Wildlife Ranch in 2003. They were named Hasani, Rafiki and Zuri and were born 2002. Rafiki was initially the dominant male, but Zuri chose Hasani as her preferred mate and they formed a successful breeding pair.

Zuri gave birth to four litters at Hamilton Zoo:

The first litter was born 2004 and contained 2.7 surviving pups. The two males (Tatu and Tano) were retained in their natal pack; the seven females (Moja, Mbili, Nne, Sita, Sabba, Nane and Tisa) were transferred to Orana Wildlife Park in 2008.

The second litter was born 2006 and contained 2.0 surviving pups. The two males (Mac and Mazi) were retained in their natal pack.

The third litter was born 2007 and contained 2.0 surviving pups. The two males (Atsu and Zumo) were retained in their natal pack.

The fourth litter was born 2008 and contained 1.0 surviving pup. The male (Ishe) was retained in his natal pack.

This successful breeding pack was disbanded, following the export of Zuri to Taronga Western Plains Zoo in 2008.

Unsuccessful breeding packs (2008-2022):

Hamilton Zoo received a further eight dogs (three same sex sibling pairs and two individual females) between 2008 and 2020. Unfortunately none of the resulting pairings yielded surviving pups.

Two new females (Shira and Mwenzi) arrived from Orana Wildlife Park in 2008.

Mwenzi was introduced to the younger males. She formed a pair with Zumo, but never conceived.

Shira was introduced to Hasani and Rafiki, but never produced any surviving pups. After the deaths of these elderly males, Shira was introduced to the younger pack and died 2011.

A new female, Rukiya (2005), arrived from Wellington Zoo in late 2011. The male pack (seven brothers) were split into two, with Zumo and Atsu successfully integrated with Rukiya; and Tatu, Tano, Mac, Mazi and Ishe remaining as a pack of five. The latter were exported to Singapore Zoo in 2014.

Zumo and Rukiya formed a pair, but no surviving pups were produced. Atsu died 2015 and Rukiya died 2016.

In 2016, Tafari and Msaka were imported from Perth Zoo. They were sisters born 2011. Zumo was successfully introduced to them, but Tafari died 2017. Zumo and Msaka were held together as a non breeding pair (Msaka was infertile) until Zumo’s death in 2019.

Two new males (Romeo and Kudu) were imported in 2017 from the UK. They were brothers born 2012. After the death of Zumo, they were introduced to Msaka.

In 2020, a female named Itanya (2016) was imported from Monarto Zoo. She was introduced to Romeo; while Kudu remained with Msaka.

In 2022, Msaka and Itanya died within months of each other. Msaka died of cancer; and Itanya died after delivering a litter of stillborn pups. Their respective mates, Romeo and Kudu, were successfully reintroduced to each other.

Phasing out (2023):

Hamilton Zoo are unfortunately planning to phase out this species:

Kudu died in 2023, which leaves the zoo with one elderly male (Romeo). The zoo are planning to phase out this species.

Descendants of Zuri:

Although the export of Zuri to Taronga Western Plains Zoo brought an end to Hamilton Zoo’s highly successful breeding pack, it did result in Zuri producing 2.2 pups at Dubbo in 2009. One of these pups formed a pair at Monarto (producing a litter in 2016) and subsequently, Zuri has a multitude of descendants in the region.

Altina Wildlife Park received a female named Zahra from Taronga Western Plains Zoo. I’d be interested to know if she was was a descendant of Zuri, considering the timeline fits her being one of the female pups from Zuri’s 2009 litter. If so, Zuri has even more descendants; as like Zuri, Zahra produced four successful litters.

Wellington Zoo (History)

First African wild dogs (1971):

Wellington Zoo first imported African wild dogs from Melbourne Zoo in 1971. I don’t know any details on these dogs or whether they bred at Wellington; but from maps, it appears the zoo no longer had the species by the mid-1980’s.

Breeding pack (2003-2008):

Two sibling pairs were imported from Johannesburg Zoo in July 2003:

1.0 Nyoka (December 2001) Died April 2006
1.0 Zahabu (December 2001) Died December 2008

0.1 Malaika (March 2002) Died May 2006
0.1 Mupenzi (March 2002) Died September 2012

The dogs were successfully introduced to form a pack of four, producing a total of five litters:

The first and second litter were born to Malaika and Mupenzi in May 2004. This is a common phenomenon in newly formed packs, where the hierarchy is still being established. Three pups survived from these two litters:

1.0 Mongo (May 2004) Died April 2014
0.1 Kibibi (May 2004) Died September 2007
0.1 Layla (May 2004) Died February 2013

The third litter was born to Malaika in November 2005, after she established herself as the alpha female. Three pups survived from this litter:

1.0 Jelani (November 2005) Died February 2014
1.0 Moyo (November 2005) Died April 2014
0.1 Rukiya (November 2005) Transferred December 2011

The fourth litter was born to Mupenzi in July 2006, who assumed the alpha role after the death of Malaika. No pups survived.

The fifth litter was stillborn to Mupenzi in May 2008.

Phasing out (2014):

Zahabu died in December 2008, which left the zoo without an unrelated breeding pair. No further breeding was undertaken and Rukiya was transferred to Hamilton Zoo to attempt breeding (see post above for more details).

The last three dogs (Mongo, Moyo and Jelani) died in 2014 and despite the zoo announcing plans to import another four founders from South Africa that year, they’ve never held the species again.

Though Wellington Zoo only (recently) held this species for just under 11 years from July 2003 to April 2014, it was impressive to see they bred a number of litters.

In the unlikely event Wellington Zoo acquire African wild dogs in the future, I suspect it would be a non breeding pack rather than a breeding pack.

Orana Wildlife Park (History)

First pack - attempted breeding (1998-2007):

Orana Wildlife Park’s first African wild dogs were imported in 1998 from Perth Zoo. They were three males named George, Julius and Kaz.

Two females were imported from Cango Wildlife Ranch in 2002. They were named Shira and Mwenzi and were littermates born 2001.

In the summer of 2003, Orana Wildlife Park reported hopes for African wild dog pups, but no births eventuated from this pack.

George and Julius died in 2003 and the park maintained a pack of 1.2 dogs until the death of Kaz in 2006. The following year, Shira and Mwenzi were transferred to Hamilton Zoo for breeding and the park has held same sex female packs ever since.

Second pack - non-breeding (2007-2017):

In 2007, seven female African wild dogs arrived from Hamilton Zoo. They were littermates born 2004 and were named Moya, Mbili, Nne, Sita, Sabba, Nane and Tisa.

By May 2012, Mbili, Sabba and Nane had died; leaving Orana with Tisa (alpha female), Nne, Sita and Moja (lowest ranking).

Tisa died November 2012 and of the three remaining dogs, Nne assumed the alpha role. Another female died prior to 2015; and the remaining two had died by 2017.

Third pack - non-breeding (2018 -):

In 2018, eight female African wild dogs were imported from Taronga Western Plains Zoo. The pack consisted of a six year old named Azizi and her seven nieces. Kumi, Lady, Pat and Tybo were littermates born 2016. Makena, Tamu and Tisa were littermates born 2017.

Azizi, Lady, Tamu and Tisa are now deceased; which leaves Orana with Kumi, Pat, Tybo and Makena.

After an unsuccessful attempt at breeding African wild dog in the 2000’s, Orana Wildlife Park has held two non-breeding packs since 2007.

When Hamilton Zoo’s elderly male passes, Orana will be the only holder in New Zealand. It’ll be interesting to see if they continue with the species when their four ageing dogs pass; or import Spotted hyena as Hamilton Zoo are planning to do.

Thank you very interesting really appreciate the history. I’m trying to work out the relatedness of all the APD in Australia. I’ve passed my course but re-editing my husbandry guidelines as my course coordinator thinks it will be a useful reference. Oh and currently swimming through the captive populations world wide, though the Australiasian region pop has some inconstancy’s pup wise for 2023 I’m trying to work out if there is a data error on world wide the spreed sheet, as I’m not sure if they count pups born but not survived (the information which was via a very helpful person ) . Thankfully zoofan15 Australian data is correct, thank you

No problem and I’m glad to know our population data is all in order. :)

Unsuccessful litters typically aren’t mentioned in the media, but I did read via Zoos SA’s latest annual report that Monarto Safari Park had a non-surviving litter of African wild dogs that aren’t otherwise on this list. Hamilton Zoo similarly had a stillborn litter (reported on socials) in 2022.

The population list (see the revised list in the spoiler tab on Post #8 - October 2) only lists current living dogs held in Australasian zoos; but for those interested, I’ve detailed the history of a few of the facilities in the region.

Update 6/2/24 changed and amended number African painted dog Monarto safari park 4:4:0 confirmed via keeper and private comm Zims possible error was communication error sorry ( take off Liyana female) I have not as yet found out how and when

I know there were some hierarchy issues of late, so perhaps Liyana has been removed to reduce fighting.

I believe this leaves Monarto with the following:

0.1 Bulu (14/01/2016) Jengo x Kibi (Monarto)
0.1 Penda (14/01/2016) Jengo x Kibi (Monarto)
1.0 Baraka (21/04/2017) Hasani x Kisuri (Perth)

0.1 Amani (27/04/2021) Baraka x Bulu (Monarto)
0.1 Sanaa (27/04/2021) Baraka x Bulu (Monarto)

From the original litter of eight pups (born 27/04/2021), 2.4 survived to June 2021 with Liyana being the fourth female and the second male pup (Jasiri) appearing to be deceased as of 2022.

thank you, yes I think historical issue with number in this case. Known 4 older 2;2 (confirmed who) and 4 younger siblings confirmed number 2:2 but not name. I’m still waiting on hopeful information via a source. Thank you
