Australasian Fennec Fox Research Thread

Thanks! A bit of work does go into these lists.

Fennec fox and some of the other lists compiled in recent times are more of a challenge as the information isn’t readily available via news reports. These are the species that fly under the radar versus elephants, where a birth or a death is international news.

There’s also been great variation in the assistance given by zoos. Most have been fantastic, but one I emailed was completely uncooperative.

I agree; and I’ve found that too whilst researching some species. Some facilities will not only respond, but also go out of their way to find the information your requesting, whilst some will simply respond and provide simple info (but none further than that), and others will respond but go on to provide no info whatsoever. And some don’t even respond at all! Very inconsistent, but I’ve sort of developed a good idea now of which zoos I should take the time to email, which I shouldn’t.

Agreed. Some are amazing and have gone above and beyond; while others don’t even reply. I’ve also experienced the following:

One question only: They’ll answer the first question, but any follow up questions are ignored.

Refuse to help: They write back, but only to tell you they’re unable to disclose to a non zoo employee what the parents of a Jaguar cub that was born at their zoo in 1970 was called.

Answer your question with a generic answer: You ask if they’re planning to breed their tigers that year and they tell you about coordinated breeding programmes and species coordinators.
