Correction to Adelaide Zoo history...

Adelaide Zoo

Adelaide Zoo have only ever kept Maned Wolf as exhibition animals. Pre-Altina they held 3 individuals from Melbourne. Since Altina took over as regional coordinators they have held 3 individuals, the first arriving in 2016.

Taronga have briefly exhibited Maned Wolf over the years, usually displaying post-reproductive individuals, or those in transit to other zoos.

Hey Akasha, its possible Kulkucan 0.1, Steppen 1.0, & Virginia 0.1, and the non-survinig two litters of 0.0.5 and 0.0.2 borns in 1988, and the non-surviving two litters of 0.0.2 and 0.0.5 who were born just two days apart in June 1990 - were likely all born in behind-the-scenes/off-display enclosures at the zoo (dont mean privacy birthing dens that all mother maned wolves should have of course as we all know). I think their original two adjoined enclosures were gone and under construction by '88 (for the zoo's 'Harmony Farm' complex)- just thought in case you were interested in the background story (am a big Perth Zoo history 'nerd' too, so I try to 'piece together' what have found out/can find out about the zoo - posted about reply from the zoo about where the maned wolves were housed for a while here Species gained and/or lost at Perth Zoo since 1992 [Perth Zoo] ).

Research

I’ve done some research on holdings:

Pacho and Rio at Crocodylus Park are deceased. Crocodylus is no longer a holder of Maned wolf.

Mariano transferred from Hunter Valley to Altina and Hija is deceased. They now have a male Maned wolf (Nico), who came from Wildlife HQ.

Rocco at Wildlife HQ died.

Altina have 14 adult Maned wolves, plus the two pups.

Summary of the above:

Adelaide: Toko and Ninka
Darling Downs: Fane and Lupa
Hunter Valley: Nico
Mansfield: Delta and Quinta
Shoalhaven: Atreo and Chico
Tasmania Zoo: Solana and Chica
Wildlife HQ: Eberado and Eartha

Altina’s Maned Wolves

I’ve gone through this thread and compiled a list of Maned wolves that are potential candidates for living at Altina Wildlife Park. In addition to having been known to have been at Altina, the criteria was as follows:

A) Not explicitly stated to be deceased.
B) Aged 15 years of age or under.
C) Not currently at any of the other holders (all confirmed as of July 2025).

Mariano was sent to Hunter Valley last year.

Wolves confirmed alive as of last year; Tepin, Mucacho, Anahi, Mariano, Raina, Pablo, and an individual Neto.

Mariano has since retuned to Altina. Since he returned so quickly, I assume he was needed for breeding (and could even be the sire of their latest pups).

Hunter Valley now have a single male (Nico, born 2024 at WHQ).

Considering Altina took over from the Western plains zoos phase out of the species what they have done is nothing less than remarkable, Full credit to them and the utterly professional way they have committed to a successful breeding program!

One of the Western Plains zoo keepers actually went to South America (I believe it was in the late 80s, I can't remember which year) to study what plant species that the Maned Wolf consumed in its wild native habitat, one species was very closely related to the tomato. Since the species appeared to be of high interest at Dubbo it really came as a complete surprise to me that they lost interest in them as they did!

So many South American species that once thrived across our region’s main zoos (Jaguar, Ocelot, Brazilian tapir, Collared peccary) have dwindled to either nothing or next to nothing. It’s very disappointing.

I’m extremely grateful to Altina for their tireless efforts in conserving Maned wolf. Thanks to them, there’s now 29 Maned wolves held across eight facilities, with two litters born in the last 12 months.

I fully agree but in resent years the hiring of non zoo savvy managers is likely to have been the driving force in so many species being lost in our regions collections. The saving grace in my view has been a number of zoo minded smaller regional zoos like Altina, DDZ, Mogo, Sydney zoo among others spread across the country

Bly was born at Altina on 12/10/2013 to Pepe and Chiquita. Her littermates were Sol and an unnamed pup of unknown gender who died young.

2013 was an exciting year for Altina, with Senna and Olinta producing their third litter in three years that year also.

So in that case the DDZ born pups are closely related all essentially descending from Pepe and the Dubbo lines;

Bly - Pepe (import) x Chiquita (Altina born), Chiquita's parents are Senna (Dubbo born) x Olinta (import).

Fane - Unk x Adora, Adora's parents are Pepe x Arapey (Dubbo born).

It’ll be interesting to hear who the sire is. Since Mariano was recalled soon after his transfer to Hunter Valley, I’m wondering if he’s a candidate.

Not sure where Mirabel came from i.e. whether she’s Australian born or an import.
