That’s a good idea. Some of the population lists warrant annual (or even two yearly updates), but the porcupine population is far more dynamic and would suit regular updates.

An April update will illustrate the recent changes and hopefully Hamilton Zoo will announce a birth by either your July or October update all things going to plan.

Forgot to mention, you may want to follow up with Natureland re. Diallo. Unless he’s going for some sort of longevity record, I’d assume he’s passed given the usual lifespan is 10-15 years. Don’t let it delay your April update, but something to consider for the July update.
 
Hamilton Zoo Welcome First Porcupine Birth

Hamilton Zoo are celebrating the birth of their first porcupine:

The baby porcupine arrived last Sunday (2 April) and is the first Cape porcupine to be born at Hamilton Zoo to mum Ingozi and dad Ayanfe. We can now confirm it was love at first sight (if you get what we mean).

To have successfully given birth just three months after Ayanfe transferred to us from Auckland Zoo is fantastic. As part of the Cape porcupine Species Survival Programme, Ingozi’s genetics are incredibly valuable.

Monarto Safari Park - Update:

Monarto’s juvenile South African crested porcupine has been sexed as a female:

0.1 Louie (23/01/2023) Oliver x Rita

This is one of two porcupettes born this year - the other being a female named Adana born 2 April 2023 at Hamilton Zoo.

The State of Things:

The Oliver/Rita line is extensively represented in Australasia with this pair and their offspring comprising 17/24 South African crested porcupines in the region. With the above births, they now have three sons, three daughters, five grandsons, three grandaughters and one great grandaughter.

Some fresh imports would be welcomed with only Natureland and Orana holding unrelated pairs to this line - and the Natureland pair being elderly/post reproductive (if still alive).

Monarto Safari Park update:

The Cape porcupine babies were born in August and have been sexed as a male (Walter) and female (Winni).

Like their sister (Louie), they appear to have been named in advance, but their gender was confirmed in an update on socials today.

Announcement of Hamilton Zoo’s porcupettes:

From Hamilton Zoo’s socials:

The Porcupettes were born last Wednesday (25 Oct) and follow on from the birth of older sister Adana in April this year. With a gestation period of approximately three months, we’ll let you do the math on that one!

To have successfully had three offspring in the span of a year is fantastic news, Ingozi’s genetics are very valuable to the Cape Porcupine population within Australasia. The whole family are doing very well, with Ayanfe once again taking on the role of doting father. Even Adana has been seen helping Mum and Dad to groom and look after her new siblings.
 
Cape Porcupine Transfer

Charles has been transfered from Monarto Safari Park to Darling Downs Zoo.

This gives DDZ a population of 1.2 Cape porcupine:

Charles is their paternal uncle (Nzuri and Charles are full brothers).
 
A new holder!

@Zorro mentioned in the DDZ thread that Darling Down's two previous females (sisters, Morticia and Ophelia) have been sent down to Zoodoo, making them the first of their species in Tasmania.

Cape porcupine transfer (continued):

Thanks to @ZooNZ for the note that Bruce and Kali were exchanged for Orana’s pair of Cape porcupine (Lawrence and Snickers).

Considering these four animals are all founders (and three of them unrepresented), I’m not entirely sure of the point of this transfer. Considering neither pair have bred in their time together, I’d have thought it’d have made more sense to mix them up (Bruce with Snickers; Lawrence with Kali).

Potentially Mwiba and Snickers could be paired, but Mwiba is from a well-represented line; and then why bring in Lawrence?

New holder:

Monarto Safari Park have transferred two young porcupine (Walter and Winni) to Adelaide Zoo. Winni is a male, not a female. This transfer leaves Monarto Safari Park with 1.2 Cape porcupine (Oliver, Rita and Louie).

Father’s Day Birth Announcements

Orana Wildlife Park:

Orana Wildlife Park have announced the birth of twins to Bruce and Kali. This is the first birth at Orana since 2007 and Kali’s first litter. Given she’s a founder, this is especially exciting news.

Hamilton Zoo:

Hamilton Zoo have welcomed twins to their experienced breeding pair, Ayanfe and Ingozi. This is their third litter together. I caught a brief glimpse of the porcupettes on my visit yesterday.
 
Orana Wildlife Park update:

The twin porcupettes have been sexed as two males and named as follows:

1.0 Asari (00/08/2024)
1.0 Kahari (00/08/2024)

They have both grown a lot, with Kahari taking after Mum as he is the bigger of the two, Asari is quite small like his Dad.
