Mr and Mrs Nuri (Auckland's latest breeding pair) then arrived in December of 2017 from Germany and Italy respectively.

They birthed their first pair of twins in June of 2018, apparently the first in sixteen years (although we know it was actually seventeen years, as per the studbook).

Yes, it appears they allowed the aforementioned bachelor troop to die out, before sourcing new imports and recommencing breeding.

Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary currently has three brother 3.0 Cottontop tamarins
Toro 1.0 (aged 15)
Arami 1.0 (aged 13)
Pablo 1.0 (aged 12)


Hamilton Zoo currently has two 1.1 Cottontop tamarins:
Rio 1.0 (b 26/3/2023)
Yara 0.1 (b 8/5/2019)


Natureland Wildlife Trust currently has 1.1 Cottontop tamarins
Jahli 1.0 (b 22/12/2011)
Delta 0.1 (b 11/7/2004 at Mogo thanks @Zoofan15 for finding her in the studbook and that she had/has a twin brother)

Soto (and his deceased mate Celeste) were the parents of Cilia - born 2020; German - born 2021; and an infant born 2022 (which appears to be Roro).

I would assume Yuri is the fourth offspring of this pair; with the only other possibility being she recently transferred in to pair with Soto or German.

Any idea what happened to Esteban, Celeste's previous mate?

I’m thinking he passed away circa 2018 as it doesn’t appear he was transferred elsewhere and he had a maximum of two surviving offspring with Celeste, which isn’t a lot considering they were both regional founders (i.e. I don’t believe he was paired with a new mate at any other facility).

Esteban and Celeste had twins in May 2017 and a single infant in early 2018. Soto (Celeste’s new mate) was imported 2019, so I think we can assume Esteban died around 2018 (maybe early 2019).

The 2017/2018 annual report notes:

Two female Cotton Top Tamarin died as a result of different medical factors; a five month-old Cotton Top Tamarin was euthanised on medical grounds.

From this, we can assume at least one of Esteban and Celeste’s offspring died (the five month old). Hopefully the reference to the two females that died referred to elderly members of the previous colony and not the 2017 twins.

They have two Cotton Top Tamarins; 'Raf' (02/09/2012) and 'Sophia' 903/12/2019)

And a bachelor group of six Emperor Tamarins; 'Ladino', 'Escabar', 'Pablo', 'Emilio', 'Pegar' and 'Dupdo'. This is apparently Auckland's previous breeding male and his sons (their mother is/was named 'Rose').

Sofia/Sophia the Cotton-top tamarin was born at Auckland Zoo to Nuri and Mrs Nuri.

This is what I have regarding Emperor tamarins:

Ladino did indeed come from Auckland Zoo and had a mate called Rose. Ladino originally came to Auckland Zoo from Perth Zoo in 2018.

Litters of Ladino and Rose:

First litter 0.1 - Isla - born 00/03/2020

Second litter were 1.1 twins born 00/02/2021 - Emilo and Xoco.

Third litter were twins born 15/11/2021.

Fourth litter were twin males born 00/10/2022.

Since he has five sons, it seems likely that the third litter were also 2.0 with Escobar and Pablo; and Pegar and Dupdo being the two sets of male twins born 2021 and 2022.

Auckland Zoo - Emperor tamarin update:

It was mentioned on socials today that Auckland Zoo has two Emperor tamarins (Rose and Xoco).

This ties in with the account above of Rose’s third litter containing two males (i.e. there wasn’t a fifth litter), which went to Australia along with the father Ladino; the male twins from the fourth litter; and the male from the second litter (twins).

The only Emperor tamarin in this family now unaccounted for is Isla (born 2020).

The bachelor males are also apparently at Butterfly Creek - not Australia.

I also saw only two Emperor Tamarins when I visited July of last year, so I believe they've only had these two for at least that period of time.

My bad, I see Butterfly Creek was noted further back in the thread (I think I had Australia in my mind because Ladino came from Perth Zoo in 2018). Auckland undertakes quite a few exchanges with Butterfly Creek actually.

It’d be interesting to know what happened to Isla - whether she transferred out or died young. The last mention I can find of her is from late 2021, when Rose’s third pregnancy was announced.

Not sure if it has been noted ; Symbio no longer have Cotton-Top Tamarins in their collection . They have however retained their Golden Lion Tamarins that cohabitate the Pygmy Marmoset Exhibit adjacent to the meerkats .

I’m wondering if this is a temporary absence of this species from their collection. They remain listed on their website and it wouldn’t be difficult to source more Cotton-top tamarin from within the region.

Several zoos have bred them in recent years including Auckland, Hamilton, Adelaide and Altina.

On that note, I need to follow up with Hamilton Zoo as I’ve only seen two Cotton-top tamarins on recent visits (presumably the parents), suggesting the offspring may have transferred out.
