AN AUSTRALIA Zoo vet caught stealing items from a Myer store attempted to pay for the goods with cash during a court appearance yesterday.

Melanie Panayiotou, 31, faced no further punishment after appearing in Maroochydore Magistrates Court, despite the magistrate acknowledging shoplifters were likely to reoffend. The champion marathon runner, whose website lists her as No.1 on the Australian *National Marathon Rankings, pleaded guilty to one count of unauthorised dealing with shop goods and one count of stealing from the Maroochydore Myer on October 3.

Ms Panayiotou told the court she was not acting like her normal self when she stole more than $500 of swimwear and a quilt cover, which she stashed inside her bag. She also pleaded guilty to stealing three boxes of chocolates and a gift bag from a Target store on November 30 after police officers searched her and found the items in her bag.

The athletics star attempted to pay the $519.70 restitution for the goods via cash in an envelope through her lawyer during the court appearance.

However, Magistrate Rod Madsen ordered Ms Panayiotou to immediately pay money straight back to the store she had stolen from.

In sentencing, Mr Madsen said: “Unfortunately, people with these problems keep doing it before they get help.

Ms Panayiotou’s defence lawyer told the court that his client was going through a stressful time in her life.

The lawyer said she was very remorseful and planned to seek help.

What is the annual attendance for the zoo, is it over the million mark?

Giraffe, Sally has given birth to a female calf:

In terms of cuteness, the not-so-little bundle of joy born at Australia Zoo is head and shoulders above the rest.

The zoo, on Queensland's Sunshine Coast, has announced its resident giraffe Sally had given birth to her second baby - a female calf.

With giraffes enduring a 15-month gestation period, the pregnancy was likely a pain in the neck for Sally, but staff say it was worth it to continue Australia Zoo's successful breeding program.

The yet-to-be-named calf, who measured just under two metres tall, is the fourth giraffe to be born at the zoo in two years, joining sister Tulip and half sisters Skye and Lily.

"Sally is being really attentive to her new baby which is a great sign and they're both doing very well health-wise," the zoo's head of African animals, Manu Ludden, said on Wednesday.

"All our giraffe are extremely sweet-natured and are very relaxed around the new calf, but as with any family with a new baby, they are very inquisitive of our new addition."

The calf's name will be chosen at the Steve Irwin Gala Dinner in Los Angeles on Saturday.

Held in the late Crocodile Hunter's honour, the dinner raises funds for the Wildlife Warriors charity, which supports conservation initiatives around the world.
